And when they're finished, they stand in the doorway of a place that no longer quite belongs to them. An empty house is a peculiar thing. The rooms are the same size. The windows still face the same direction. The floor still creaks in that one spot. But the life that filled it has gone. There might be a small mark on the wall where a picture hung. A scratch in the floor from a chair that was moved a thousand times. A patch of grass in the backyard that never grew properly. Little evidence that somebody was there. And then they close the door. Someone else will arrive. They'll bring their furniture. Hang different pictures. Complain about the same creaky floor. Perhaps they'll raise children there. Perhaps they'll grow old there. Perhaps they'll stay for six months and move again. The people leaving don't get to decide. Their part of the story is finished. But they can leave the place ready for another one. I've always thought there was something quietly decent about that. The idea that we should take care of something even when we're no longer going to benefit from it. Maybe that's a useful way to think about other departures too. Not every relationship can be left spotless. Not every disagreement can be resolved. But we can often leave less damage than we might have. And sometimes that's an achievement worth recognizing. There is another reason leaving well matters. The person we become at the end of something is still the person who has to live with what happens next. Anger can be satisfying in the moment. So can the dramatic exit. The final accusation. The perfectly delivered insult. The speech we've rehearsed in the shower for three weeks. But eventually the moment passes. The audience goes home. The door closes. And we're left with whatever we've done. Sometimes that will be something we're proud of. Sometimes it will be a memory we wish we could revise. The difficult thing about last words is that we rarely know they're our last words until afterward. We imagine there will be another conversation. Another opportunity to explain. Another chance to say something kinder. Sometimes there is. Sometimes there isn't. And that makes the way we leave worth thinking about before the moment arrives. We talk a great deal about leaving a legacy. Usually we mean something grand. An accomplishment. A body of work. A family. A contribution that will outlive us. But perhaps we leave smaller legacies all the time. In workplaces where people remember us fondly. In friendships that ended without becoming bitter. In homes we cared for. In people who were treated decently even when we no longer had anything to gain from them. In the simple fact that someone was glad we had been there, even if they understood why we had to go. We cannot always control how we're remembered. And we shouldn't spend our lives trying. But there is something to be said for making our final contribution an act of care rather than an act of destruction. For recognizing that an ending can be sad without being ugly. That leaving can be necessary without making everything that came before it worthless. That sometimes the most respectful thing we can say about a chapter of our lives is simply: It was good, but now it's time. Perhaps that's the art of leaving well. Not making sure everyone regrets our departure. Not proving we were right to go. Not insisting that the last word belongs to us. Just knowing when our part is finished. Being grateful for what deserves gratitude. Leaving behind what no longer belongs to us. And, whenever possible, closing the door gently.

Canada’s Bill C-22 would force telecoms and messaging apps to keep six months of metadata on every citizen, whether or not they’re suspected of anything. Cabinet will decide who has to comply and how, with the first regulations due up to two years after it becomes law. Companies can be fined $250,000 a day for not obeying secret ministerial orders. The minister insists it isn’t about surveilling honest Canadians. Signal would rather leave the country than find out, and Windscribe is packing too. The bill is now with a Senate committee, which is the last place anyone can change it.

Man, what is happening with Chinese stocks? For about two years, Beijing has encouraged ordinary families to move their savings from bank deposits into stocks to help fund China’s AI push. Many listened and went all in. Retail investors oversubscribed Unitree’s IPO 8,000 times, and the stock has halved since it began trading in August. AI stocks now account for 42% of China’s total market value. The CSI 300, China’s top 300 companies, peaked on June 22, 2026. Since mid-August, it hasn’t had a single up week: 11 straight down weeks through October 23, the longest run since the index was born in 2005. On Thursday, October 22, it closed 20% below the June peak, officially a bear market. The AI stocks at its heart, tracked by the STAR 50, lost about $480 billion, or 40%, in under four months. And it hit retail investors hard. As the big institutions sold, the stocks retail investors owned the most fell the most. Now the drama. Beijing’s “national team,” the state-backed funds that buy to calm the market, has been buying since July, and last week it went all out. About $19 billion poured into the funds it’s known to use, the most since the trade-war crash in April 2025. On Friday, the index jumped 1.7%, and for a moment it looked like a turnaround. It still closed the week down, red for the eleventh week running. Then Monday closed down 0.04%. The state’s biggest push in a year and a half, and still not one green week. Everyone, this is what we call a slow bleed where every rescue looks like the bottom and isn’t. Beijing can buy shares, but it can’t buy belief. Belief comes back only when Chinese AI companies show real profits and Chinese consumers start spending again. Until then, watch every weekly close, because the state can slow the fall, but it can’t stop it.
BREAKING 🚨: China Chinese Stock Market is now on track for 12 consecutive red weeks, its longest losing streak in history 📉📉

38% of non-white Canadians think there are too many non-white immigrants compared to 34% of white Canadians who think so
A new poll on immigration from the Environics Institute finds that first-generation Canadians and non-white Canadians have stronger opinions against immigration than white Canadians and third-generation+ Canadians. 63% of first-generation Canadians and 60% of non-white Canadians think too many immigrants are not adopting Canadian values. 57% of first-generation Canadians and 54% of non-white Canadians think that many refugee claimants are fake.

Wildcards Radio is getting compared to old-school Howard Stern… and frankly, that’s only going to make us harder to deal with. 😏🎙️ Ball-busting. Filthy jokes. Questionable confessions. The kind of friendship where “I love you, buddy” sounds suspiciously like “go fuck yourself.” We’re probably the last people who needed this encouragement. Come listen before somebody’s wife makes us delete an episode. 😂 👉 wildcardsradio.com #WildcardsRadio #ComedyPodcast #HowardStern
