Friedberg from the top rope..
why not just raise income tax rates?
because your real intent is not to just “provide healthcare”.
you’re masking that you are proposing the creation of, for the first time in the 250 years of this American republic, an organized government seizure of private property from citizens.
you’re calling it a “wealth tax” or a “billionaires tax” or “millionaires tax” or whatever nom du jour polls well. but at the end of the day, it’s the seizure of private property from citizens by the government. citizens that earned money, paid their fair taxes on those earnings (53% if they live in California) and are now being told they need to hand over after-tax assets because the government has failed to provide promised services with the revenue it’s collected, and are now re-casting their own failure to be a socio-economic inequity that must be justly resolved... a slippery slope that has never gone anywhere good (see economic effects in USSR, Cuba, Venezuela, France and Norway wealth tax etc.)
the American founders fled tyranny in Europe and this amazing nation was populated by immigrants (myself and your parents) from around the world not just looking for a “better life” but for a place where they could have freedom from tyrannical governments that can take what they want from private citizens. a great nation borne of property rights, the rule of law, and endowed freedoms to believe, speak, or act. these principles led to the greatest run of innovations, successes, and widespread increase in prosperity, for all citizens, ever seen.
the citizens, the individuals, not the institutions, delivered this progress. those who invented, who toiled, who bled, who sacrificed, who took risk and persevered, who led, and who changed the world, are not charlatans, kleptocrats, or oligarchs. they’re what made us all better off. prosperity is a measure of america’s success, not its failure.
it is your principle that is so offensive, as evidenced by the broad disdain for your flippant flirtation with the darkest of human fantasy - socialism. you and other neo-socialists have led so many of us to reflect on America’s history and what it is becoming. that now leads so many to consider, so unnecessarily, leaving their homes for a place where everyone stands up to shout down the principle you suggest. because if your ideas are now considered moderate, it’s clear this titanic is sinking.
that a “simple tax” of taking assets that have been earned, through toil and tribulation, rightly taxed, and preserved, should now be unjustly seized, is your solution to a problem of obvious government mismanagement and outright fraud, tells us that your true motivation lies not in giving people healthcare but in cutting down success and deleting the system of prosperity and opportunity for all.
i don’t care, and neither should anyone else, what the sum total market value of a private citizens private assets might be. it is none of my business and should be none of yours. because, again, once you open that pandora’s box, we might as well study Lord of the Flies … there is literally nothing stopping 51% of citizens demanding that their government go out and seize 100% of the private property of the 49%.
want to give healthcare to people in need? do your job and fix healthcare. make it affordable. want to be lazy about it? then do your job lazily and raise income taxes.
want to take private property from private citizens who have paid their fair share of taxes and legally earned their property, then honestly declare that it is envy, not inequity, that you strive to resolve…

There are potentially serious concerns about the long-term safety of the @Space_Station. Some parts of it are simply getting too old and obviously that risk grows over time.
Even though @SpaceX earns billions of dollars from transporting astronauts & cargo to the ISS, I nonetheless would like to go on record recommending that it be de-orbited within 2 years.
The ISS's structural integrity is far more marginal than is being publicly discussed. We are having multiple, and increasingly frequent, leaks from heavily fatigued node segments in the Russian section.
When Aluminum gets flexed it fatigues and gets harder, increasing its tendency to crack. Cracks concentrate forces at their tips, and spread over time.
Multiple cracks have been discovered.
There is no "factor of safety" associated with this failure mode. None of the structural pressure vessels are meant to crack.
We are not even single fault tolerant on the structural integrity of the station. We could wake up tomorrow and find, with zero warning, that it has failed catastrophically.
Whether that means a leak slow enough to close some hatches, get the crew out or at least into safer parts of the station, is a roll of the dice.
It could also depressurize in less than a minute.

I shared this note with the Washington Post team this morning:
I’m writing to let you know about a change coming to our opinion pages.
We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets. We’ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others.
There was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the reader’s doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views. Today, the internet does that job.
I am of America and for America, and proud to be so. Our country did not get here by being typical. And a big part of America’s success has been freedom in the economic realm and everywhere else. Freedom is ethical — it minimizes coercion — and practical — it drives creativity, invention, and prosperity.
I offered David Shipley, whom I greatly admire, the opportunity to lead this new chapter. I suggested to him that if the answer wasn’t “hell yes,” then it had to be “no.” After careful consideration, David decided to step away. This is a significant shift, it won’t be easy, and it will require 100% commitment — I respect his decision. We’ll be searching for a new Opinion Editor to own this new direction.
I’m confident that free markets and personal liberties are right for America. I also believe these viewpoints are underserved in the current market of ideas and news opinion. I’m excited for us together to fill that void.

When our AI overlords take over we will have nothing to amuse ourselves, or to give ourselves a purpose except gambling on cultural communities and memetics...
At first this sounds terrible but it is most likely the birth of an entire new economy.
Right now, Meme madness is building into a re-run of NFT madness from last cycle. Some people made life changing gains, many lost everything.
However, within all the noise, the drama, the fun, the loathing, the profits and the losses, there is signal. The signal is how this technology will be used in the future for the attention economy in a somewhat decentralised on line world with mainly centralised AI as the control system.
In the end, culture, community and the desire to share experiences is a fundamental human trait. This is why sport teams or pop stars mean more to us than many other things. It is a means of relevance, status, acceptance in a 27/7, 365 digital online society. These things ARE our new society. Politics is no different. Religion too. All are also driven by memes.
Yes, this is going to be a wild ride. Please don't get carried away thinking you too can be the next meme trading god on X. You likely won't be and will be left bitter and confused at the end of it all as you endlessly chop your portfolio into the new hot thing, too late and create a massive and complex tax bill for the privilege.
But feel free to experiment but with only a small part of your investments (<10% for me). What is being created here in the madness is actually the future (but it will be in a different format over time).
NFT's aren't dead. The technology is profound. They will be back in a multitude of formats with art being the first true PMF but many more will follow. An OTC derivative or private loan for example are perfect use cases for NFT's, as are tickets, amongst a few examples.
Tokenisation of culture will go through a similar boom bust cycle but the technology is important and the use cases will expand. This is also a re-run of the unchain capital formation craze of ICO's. That will return too but in a different, less wild guise. Was the same with DeFi in 2020 too. That trend too is only going to grow through the various boom bust experimentation cycles with stable coins being the initial PMF.
Think of speculation as the boot strapping, battle-testing, dog-fooding of the tech. It is always the earliest manifestation of a trend. It can also be hugely rewarding but by nature carries the ultimate level of risk.
Also, we all knew that AI and Crypto would meet to create a different world. The first phase of that is now underway in the crypto casino, being battle-tested in a pretty crude, basic format but make no mistake, AI agents will use token incentivisation on each other and humans and agents will use tokens for payments for compute costs + profit.
It is sometimes hard to see where this is all going but step back and observe the deeper significance. I can see that memes, NFT's, ICO's, DeFi etc are all early-stage use cases of a gigantic societal and economy shift. On top of all of this is AI, which is bigger than all of this but is less easy to invest in.
However, the very idea that we can tokenise the Attention Economy is deeply profound but as attention operates on very variable time horizons (from hours to years or even decades) it often require different skills that traditional investing/trading. Maybe the AI will soon be better than use at that too.
The one truth in all of this is that blockchain technology is the key beneficiary and due to the powerful behavioural incentives of tokens, the number will keep going up over time.
Currently we are a $2.5trn economy in Crypto Land and I think it goes to $100trn over the next 10 years. That trend will create the largest, fastest accumulation of new wealth in all human history.
This is THE big Game. You probably only have around 6 years before everything changes.
Don't fuck this Up.

🚨🇺🇸 ELON: OVERREGULATION IS STOPPING US FROM GETTING ANYTHING DONE
"SpaceX can build a rocket faster than the government can move paperwork, and it’s getting worse every year.
SpaceX got fined $140,000 for dumping drinking water on the ground at Starbase to cool the launch pad.
It rains so much there that roads get flooded, but the EPA said they wouldn’t process future applications until we paid those fines.
We just got held for ransom, basically.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. SpaceX had to do a study to see if Starship would hit a shark. It’s a big ocean with a lot of sharks, but we had to do the analysis.
Then it was, ‘What about whales?’ It goes on and on.
We’ve got to stop this madness, or we won’t be able to get anything done."
