Kemi, congratulations on leading a major British party as a Black Woman. It takes real talent to rise to where you are and deceit is what it takes to rise as a Black leader in a western Conservative Party.
It is a pity the climb did not leave room for a history book and since you chose to argue in the language of history, let us do the history. Let’s dissect your verbal diarrhea point by point.
Everyone participated." Slavery existed on every continent. So did war, and nobody calls a village feud the World War. The transatlantic trade ran for 366 years (1501 to 1866) and put about 12.5 million Africans on ships, of whom about 1.8 million died before they saw the Americas, according to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database. It ran through joint-stock companies, chartered monopolies, Lloyd's underwriters and acts of Parliament. It was hereditary, because the law made the child of an enslaved mother property from birth. It was racial, because a whole continent was defined as chattel. No other system in history combined those features at that scale. Dissolving all of it into "people from every continent" is far worse than intellectual dishonesty.
Britain was a market leader, not a participant. British ships carried about 3.2 million Africans, second only to Portugal and Brazil. The Treaty of Utrecht (1713) gave Britain the asiento, a thirty-year monopoly to supply 4,800 enslaved Africans a year to Spanish America. The Royal African Company, chartered in 1672 and headed by the Duke of York, later James II, branded its captives "DY". During Edward Colston's years in its leadership it shipped about 84,000 people, and roughly 19,000 died on the way.
You say British taxpayers should not answer for what happened before they were born. They did. In 1833 Britain borrowed £20 million to compensate slaveholders, and taxpayers serviced that loan until 2015, including the descendants of the enslaved. So the principle you invoke was not applied when the cheque went to slaveholders. It only appears when the cheque changes direction.
"Navel-gazing" is a curious charge from someone whose party spends more energy on the past (Empire nostalgia, culture war crusades) than most of those you accuse. Defend Britain if you must. But do not use your Nigerian name as the permission slip for arguments Nigerians know better than anyone.
Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade.
If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade?
On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare.
There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain.
As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again.
This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

Most of you know this story, but none of you have heard it from me.
Back in September 2018, Femi Hamzat wanted to be Governor of Lagos State. He had thirteen years of public service under Asiwaju and BRF, with the record and backing to win. Then party leaders asked him to step aside for me.
It takes a rare man to put down what he wants without nursing a grudge. Femi shook my hand and five weeks later, agreed to run beside me. I have never forgotten that.
Anyone can read a CV but only the person in the room with a man when the cameras leave can tell you who he really is. For 2,711 days, I have been in that room with him.
When COVID-19 hit, when we faced our hardest weeks, when the Blue and Red Lines ran and when the Lekki Deep Sea Port opened, Femi was there. Long before any ribbon was cut, he was asking the tough questions an engineer asks.
In many states, deputies are kept in reserve. On day one, Femi promised to be the best deputy governor in Lagos history. He kept his word. In seven years, there has not been a single day I wondered whose side he was on. We have had one government, one direction, and one voice.
Lagos runs on a relay system. The baton is never passed to a runner standing still. You run at full speed inside the exchange zone, together, before the pass. That is how Lagos has been governed for 27 years, from Asiwaju to BRF, to Ambode, to me.
Femi is a deputy governor like no other. He built the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge under Fashola, digitized government under Asiwaju and holds a doctorate in engineering. His father served Lateef Jakande. This is in his blood.
Critics say Lagos keeps choosing from the same pool. I say Lagos trains its people. With major projects underway and a master plan stretching to 2052, this is not the time to experiment. What Femi presents today is not a campaign promise cooked up on a bus, it is the next leg of a race we have been running since 1999.
Lagos does not hand the baton to a man standing still. Today, you have seen the man who is already running. Let us move forward together with The Lagos PROMISE.

“You applied for approval to build this pedestrian bridge in 2018. Dunamites, are you hearing me? It was in February 2026 when you sent a reminder about the application you made in 2018. It didn't take you more than a month after that reminder, and you got the approval. That means there's a government. When a government does well, say they've done well. If they've not done well, you can say we're looking forward to you doing this.”

I'm still trying to process the depth of @AdeolaFayehun ignorance being publicly spewed with confidence like this🤣🤣🤣
If Adeola Fayehun applied the exact same narrative and logic she used for Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery to the United States and Canada, it would read like this:
“The fact that the United States has over 130 private oil refineries is a slap on the face of the US government. The only reason private companies built and operate them is because the US government refused to build and fix its own refineries. So private companies said, ‘Screw that, we will build the refineries.’ That’s a good thing in some ways, but these are supposed to be the refineries of the country. Not that private individuals and companies cannot have them, but the government is supposed to also have refineries.”🤣🤣🤣🤣
Guess what Adeola lives in the USA with such reality of Dangote Refinery and she didn't think anything was wrong with private refineries in the USA ....
The US has 130 operable refineries (as of early 2026), all owned by private companies such as Marathon, Valero, ExxonMobil, and Phillips 66. Canada has roughly 16 major crude refineries, the large majority privately owned with one notable partial exception: Alberta’s Sturgeon Refinery, in which the provincial government holds a 50% stake alongside Canadian Natural Resources....
What is happening to all of you? Oh, they listen to Peter Obi🤣🤣🤣🤣

The packaged fraud and his minions now tell you he will establish primary healthcare facilities in every ward, but during his eight years as governor, instead of building hospitals, he converted state funds into dollars and stashed them in banks where he held shares and financial interests.

A man wanted a wife
He had everything needed to be a good husband
You were a lady who was still dilly-dallying on whether you wanted to get married or not
You wanted to see what marriage looks like before you decided whether it was your cup of tea or not
You were upfront about how you feel towards marriage
You told him, and he gave you time to make up your mind
At a point, you said, "Marriage is not for me", and you stopped all communication with this man
The man moved on and started talking to another lady
Your mother came to your room and cried bitterly that you are missing out on a good opportunity to have a home of your own and raise your own children
The pressure was much
So you went back to this man, and you begged him to take you back
You told him you had prayed and fasted, and you had heard clearly from the Lord that the marriage would be blissful for you
The man reconsidered you, and you both had a glorious marriage
Four months after the wedding, you went to London for a friend's baby shower
During the baby shower, the friend told you all the things she is enjoying as a single mother, living in her own house and raising her own baby all by herself
And you decided you don't want to get married again
Despite the fact that you were two months pregnant
You sent the man a message to move on
Marriage is not for you anymore, and nobody can force you to honour your vows
You have decided to stay in London and raise your baby all by yourself.
The man is devastated
He called your mum, and she said, "I think it is best you move on because when she gets like this, she listens to nobody"
Parents raising bad children know their children are bad, apparently
The man is left to pick up the pieces, and you are smiling now because you have executed your plan excellently.
Well done.
All power belongs to you.
Ride on.
The matter was brought to me, and I called to appeal to you, but you were offhandish and dismissive.
I told you that you will learn that there is a court where judgment is swifter than eagles
Today, two months after all the drama, your mum calls saying you are in the hospital and she is afraid that you have lost the baby
She wanted me to pray.
On Thursday morning, when I am playing snooker with my daughter
No pls.
God has answered my prayer, i cannot pray against my own answered prayer.
Black ball to pocket 3!
