Aston Villa keep scoring goals season after season through simple but effective solutions. When a centre-back drives inside, the midfielders move diagonally. This positioning forces the opposition midfielders to choose: protect the space or stay closer to their man. If they stay central to protect space, Villa's midfielders are free to receive. If they become man-oriented, straight passing lanes open up towards the front line. In Serie A, teams have long tried to manipulate man-to-man systems by moving midfielders into wide areas to open direct passing lanes towards the front players. However, this comes with a risk: losing the ball can leave midfielders out of position and expose the team in transition. Aston Villa approach this differently. They understand that vertical progression from the defensive line towards the front line during the deep build-up carries an inherent risk of losing possession. That's why, in their 4-2-2-2, the midfielders remain central, providing protection in case the ball is lost. Pau Torres feints to play around his direct opponent before driving inside. The midfielders move diagonally to open up space. McGinn receives between the lines and uses his body to protect the ball, while two other attackers begin intelligent runs in behind, timing them to exploit the defenders' blind sides. I don't know how many times I have seen this in Villa's games. Same game model season after season, but with individual details refined every year. Opponents know what's coming, but Villa keep doing it, and it keeps working.

I’ve asked this before but is there any historical event that is like the Opposite of 9/11. Like something so good that happened that it changed the world forever

Nonsense. Emery is a top manager/coach but Arteta is now the best in the world, not just the Premier League.

Unai Emery has had 17 consecutive years competing in Europe. Five Europa League titles. No manager - no manager - has better pedigree in the Premier League. He is someone who will maximise players’ talents if they are willing to give themselves to him. There is a reason the club have long pined for Emery to create a dynasty, beyond his existing terms — which run until 2029. He is the best coach Villa could possibly wish for, and the best in the Premier League. @TheAthleticFC #AVFC nytimes.com/athletic/7720174…

In our Makerfield focus group two participants said (unprompted) they had used AI to help them decide who to vote for. Not first time we've heard it and I suspect it's definitely likely to be more of a factor in the next election, so interesting to look at any ideological lean
Is there a left-wing AI model? As voters turn to AI for clarity on who they should vote for, Luke Tryl explains how different bots fall into different political tribes. @BethRigby 🎧 trib.al/JrMTQgE

Nice little piece #bbcnews on the mighty Villa’s well deserved win over the league leaders today. King Unai is staying at VP and he’s going to another level right here. And now football media you’re gonna believe us! 🔥 #legacyclubs #AVFC

That’s an incredible Villa performance again today. We know how red hot they’ve been this season but today we were simply hotter! 🔥 Fantastic defensive display from back to front 😍#AVFC

Well balanced for 2nd half. Going to be very difficult to stop City scoring but that’s the task. Another Villa goal would be lovely 🤞 🙏 #AVFC

Obviously forced choice head to heads are somewhat artificial. But tracking the shifts is useful, particularly if it looks like far from returning to 2 party politics we are instead in multiparty politics but lots of 2 party individual contests, who supporters of ‘other parties’ rally behind really matters, which is why we like to look at the H2Hs

The forced choice heads to heads give you perhaps the starkest picture of how Burnham outperforms Starmer right now. Starmer was less preferred than Davey or Badenoch and tied with Farage/Polanski. The shift of Burnham vs Polanski is particularly stark from 50-50 under Starmer to 80-20 for Burnham.

I find it really odd that some teachers seem determined to take the teach out of teaching. Teachers aren’t machines. Pupils aren’t machines. Evidence matters, but the making teaching a “science” risks damaging the craft. Teaching is relational, responsive and gloriously human.

That Utd defeat..phew. A lack of intensity, no effective press and no fight. The captain slagging off the managers tactics in public. 😬 So much wrong where to start? Doesn’t look good for Carrick..

Under Emery we’ll never be a team just making up the numbers in the UCL. He’s in it to win the tournament. It’s quite unbelievable for us Villa fans. Truly remarkable. We’re so lucky to have him and this group of players. Hang tight it’s going to be more fun this season! #AVFC

2nd in UCL 3/3 This is simply bonkers. So many young players joining only a few weeks ago. Practically an enforced team reconstruction. 1 pt after 4 PL games; yet only daft Villa fans panicked. Unai you are a master of European football. #AVFC

2-0 is a fair reflection of Villa dominance so far. Good value for it. Alysson could finally be the player who unlocks a few goals via penalties, this season. Even if it is an increasingly high threshold. #AVFC
