BREAKING: NYT reports that operatives with Democratic Alaska U.S. Senate candidate Mary Peltola’s campaign were behind the effort to find & recruit a candidate named Dan Sullivan to run against incumbent GOP Senator Dan S. Sullivan in an effort to confuse voters and peel votes from him.
Specifically, NYT says they have reviewed text messages and documents that reveal in summer 2025, a Peltola staffer received instructions from campaign staffers to find as many people named Dan Sullivan in Alaska as possible.
The staffer complied, going through voter records, and compiled a list. The operation “involved secret trips to far-flung Alaskan communities and the appearance of a mysterious Midwestern operative, who traversed the state using a fake name and made his pitch to would-be candidates over beers at brew pubs.”

“The plan worked. This spring, a retired teacher from a tiny fishing village along the Alaska Panhandle, reachable only by air and sea, announced his candidacy for Senate. His name was Dan J. Sullivan.”

“The Peltola campaign has repeatedly denied any involvement in his candidacy. But The Times has found, based on interviews and text messages, along with documents prepared for a potential lawsuit against the campaign, that not only did Ms. Peltola’s team work with people trying to recruit Mr. Sullivan to run for Senate, but the effort was much broader. The group worked to coax other would-be spoilers into the race, to dilute the incumbent’s support and help catapult the Democrat to victory.

The day 3 years ago I took this photograph of Daniel Lurie.
Daniel had read my posts on X and reached out to meet. 3 years ago. Just him and me. No PR flaks. No security. We agreed to meet at the old Hibernia Bank building where he was attending a Salvation Army lunch that day.
I said, let's walk the Tenderloin. He did not hesitate. Turk, Eddy, Larkin, Leavenworth, Jones. Drug deals in the open. Addicts using in the open. Bodies hunched over and passed out on the sidewalk.
I pointed at those bodies and asked him if he would support MANDATED care. Yes, he said.
He promised to re-empower the police, build MANDATED recovery beds, and stop handing out pipes and tinfoil that enable addicts. "I'm in it to win it," he told me.
I asked him how he'd clean up the Tenderloin and he told me he'd put a cop on every corner in the Tenderloin if he had to.
I believed him. I called myself his supporter and his friend. He looked me in the eye and sold me a cleanup story that never came.
Politicians lie all the time of course, but I still believe in accountability.
Three years later he is not a mayor cleaning up a city. He is a cheerleader with a PR budget, spending his own money to sell himself, showing up for restaurant pop ups on Instagram, and repeating the same tired line over and over and over and over again that we "still have a lot of work to do."
That is not leadership.
We are still a sanctuary city. Illegal drug dealers still poison our citizens with impunity on the same corners we walked three years ago.

Same street we walked. Same poison. Same bodies on the sidewalk. The only thing that changed is Lurie got the power, and we got the lie.

Mayor Daniel Lurie Made an announcement that Harm Reduction can no longer pass supplies out (pipes foils bubbles needle etc.) without offering people information to treatment. Nobody that got supplies through this gate was offered any type of services to treatment. It was just here you take these pipes I’ll see you again later

We handed out flyers, had some great conversations, got some thumbs-ups & clandestine claps, and (of course) encountered the opposition.

What haunted me most last night was the parent of a “trans kid” who hates seeing us at the games. I hope we did spoil his game. I hope he had the tiniest thought in his head that maybe, just maybe, his kid isn’t born in the wrong body and that his kid doesn’t need drugs and surgery to fix his body.)
