To understand offshore oil & gas operations is to also know about the FPSO.
FPSO means Floating Production, Storage and Offloading.
In simple terms, an FPSO is a floating vessel used in offshore oil and gas operations to produce, process, store, and offload hydrocarbons directly at sea. It receives fluids from subsea wells, separates oil, gas, and water, stores the processed oil, and offloads it to shuttle tankers or pipelines.
Think of it as a floating production facility + processing plant + storage terminal.
What does an FPSO actually do?
An FPSO typically performs four major functions:
- Production: Processes hydrocarbons from subsea wells via flowlines and risers.
- Storage: Holds large volumes of processed oil in onboard tanks.
- Offloading: Transfers stored oil to tankers or pipelines for transport.
- Mobility: Can be relocated to new fields, offering flexibility for remote or deep-water operations.
