I didn’t believe it when I heard Festus Okoye say this on TV. I had to go and check the Electoral Act myself, and he was right. I am shocked! Under Nigeria’s Electoral Act 2026, INEC controls the prosecution of offences under the Act, even when its own officials are involved. How does this make sense? Who holds INEC accountable? And Nigeria’s political parties? What a complete joke! How can you claim to want credible elections and still allow INEC to control the prosecution of its own officials? What a disgrace!

INEC ooo
INEC has failed to publish the register. It missed the 90 day window of which Nigerians are quiet and looking. @NewsCentralTV invited Fmr INEC Commissioner Festus Okoye to ask him the way forward. Hear him recommending prison time for those responsible for this breach. It’s a very big deal. INEC can’t be trusted.

Stop the habit of Waiting For The FG, fix your electricity problems — Shettima Tells State Governors Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged state governments to stop depending on the Federal Government to solve their electricity problems and establish functional electricity markets under the Electricity Act 2023. Speaking through Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, at a workshop in Abuja on Wednesday, Shettima said reliable electricity was essential for Nigeria’s industrial growth. “The Act empowers States to develop and regulate intrastate electricity markets within the applicable constitutional and statutory framework. “Electricity supply must become a shared responsibility, pursued with innovation and accountability across the Federation. Our States must shed the habit of waiting for Abuja to provide every answer,” he said. He cited solar potential in Sokoto, Borno and Katsina, gas resources in Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa, and hydroelectric opportunities in Niger and Kebbi, urging states to harness them for economic development. Shettima urged states yet to establish electricity regulators to act promptly. “Legislation cannot implement itself. States yet to act must begin their legislative and institutional preparations promptly. They need to establish functional electricity regulatory bodies with technical competence and capacity,” he said. He also called for private investment, saying, “Private capital must arrive with technology and expertise.” On consumer protection, he warned against arbitrary billing and poor service, adding, “The final verdict on this law will be delivered wherever a Nigerian reaches for a switch.” The Director-General of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Dr Abdulateef Shittu, said work was ongoing on a standard tariff framework to protect consumers while attracting investment. The electricity commission’s Head of Compliance, Hauwa Yakubu, disclosed that regulatory transfers had been issued to 17 states. President Bola Tinubu signed the Electricity Act in June 2023, allowing states to regulate electricity generation, transmission and distribution within their territories.

I watched an interview on #PoliticsToday* on @channelstv, anchored by @seunokin, in which the @OfficialAPCNg National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru (@DrSRJ), called me a “skit maker” and “comedian.” I am presenting here a photograph I took with Ajibola in 1998, when I led the Congress of Progressive Youths (COPY), and we were both in the trenches fighting against military dictatorship. What eventually happened to COPY offered an early indication of what Ajibola has become today, but that is a story for another day. His premise is that because Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT was declared "winner" by @inecnigeria in the deeply flawed 2023 presidential election, those of us who contested against him should somehow be ashamed of losing. Ajibola @DrSRJ came to the University of Lagos after he was expelled from the University of Ilorin in 1992 for student activism. I received him alongside Kunle Adegoke, popularly known as “K-Rad,” who is now a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). We provided them with an enabling environment to apply to re-enter the university, gain admission, and study Law at the University of Lagos @UnilagNigeria. Both eventually graduated with flying colours and went on to accomplish great things. The struggle for justice, democracy, freedom and the preservation of human dignity is neither skit-making nor comedy. Ajibola knows this because he was once part of that struggle and benefited from the solidarity of those who refused to surrender to military tyranny. It is unfortunate that he has become so carried away by the fleeting privileges of his current political position that he now ridicules the very struggle that helped shape his own future. But Ajibola should know better. Political appointments are temporary. Tinubu's regime will come and go, just like the military regimes we confronted in our youth. The principles we fought for in 1994 remain as relevant today as they were then. Our commitment to justice has endured for decades and will outlast his present political appointment. The struggle for freedom is not comedy. What is truly comical is watching yesterday's beneficiaries of resistance become today's defenders of the very oppression they once fought against. #RevolutionNow

“After representing my dear country on the international stage, playing in Europe and celebrating the trophy of winning the Africa Cup of Nations, I chose to bring my experience and success home to Imo State. I invested in my community and built a hospital - a place where people could seek care, find comfort and hold on to hope. It was a gesture of faith in my people and a commitment to helping my home state thrive. That is why the reports of what happened today 21st October, 2026 at Emenike Hospital are so painful. A place built to care for people should never become a place where patients are afraid and staff are left feeling unsafe.” Former Super Eagles striker Emmanuel Emenike cries out over an alleged invasion of his hospital in Imo State. He alleges that staff and patients were harassed by people claiming to be police officers, alongside individuals said to be from the Imo State waste management agency.

INEC’s refusal to publish the voters’ register online is deliberate. They know that people like us will scrutinise the data, identify irregularities, and ask difficult questions. But there is another troubling possibility: keeping the register away from public scrutiny preserves its commercial value for those who may be willing to pay for access. Once the data is publicly available, that advantage disappears. Is INEC protecting the integrity of the voters’ register, or protecting a monopoly over access to it?

However, during the interview with Rotus Odiri, ARISE News business correspondent, on the sidelines of the 2026 International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, Oyedele said the tax would come when income levels improve enough for Nigerians to accommodate it. The minister said taxes account for between 20 and 80 percent of pump prices in some countries, while many African countries impose between six and 10 different taxes on fuel products.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Oyedele said his remarks during an interview with ARISE News had been misrepresented, insisting that a “fuel tax is not on the table”. thecable.ng/taiwo-oyedele-de…
