If mom does night duties exclusively and dad does none, then mom is maximally sleep-deprived and dad is not at all sleep-deprived. Whereas when they each do some night duties and let the other sleep while they’re doing it, they can both be moderately sleep-deprived instead, dad is taking on some of mom’s sleep loss. Simple.
