𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗠𝗜𝗟𝟰𝗧𝗲𝗲𝗻𝘇 How much influence does social media have on teenagers, and are its effects more harmful than beneficial? On 17 October 2026, students at Elohim Secondary School in Tanga explored this question through a debate facilitated by TMC under the MIL4Teenz programme, on the motion: “Social Media Does More Harm Than Good to Teenagers.” The debate provided students with an opportunity to critically examine the impact of social media on teenagers, share different perspectives, and strengthen their critical thinking and responsible digital engagement skills. Through MIL4Teenz, TMC combines monthly Media and Information Literacy (MIL) lessons with school debates, creating spaces for students to apply their knowledge, question information, and engage constructively with digital issues. 𝗔𝗗𝗩𝗢𝗖𝗔𝗖𝗬 𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗙 | 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝘇𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 TMC, in partnership with the Internet Governance Tanzania Working Group (IGTWG) and the Tanzania Technical Community, presents Issue 11 of the Tanzania State of Internet Governance Series. The brief examines excessive data collection and privacy risks arising from Tanzania’s expanding digital systems, highlighting the need to move beyond procedural compliance towards privacy-centred digital governance.
