Prof. Virginius Xaxa’s talk on ‘Decolonising Tribal Studies in India’ is blowing my mind! 🤯🔥I love hearing how prominent Indigenous scholars like him and @DollyKikon do not hesitate at all in saying that the Indian state is a colonial state for its Indigenous groups.

Geku in Upper Siang on Saturday morning. Geku has persistently opposed the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project and militarisation, and the government’s response has been aggressive and violent. After villagers damaged vehicles while opposing the deployment, most of the uniformed personnel had left the station. But it seems they have since been redeployed. #SUMP

Why does #green_development so often target low-value rural areas with weak land tenure in Global South? My Political Geography article argues that these agendas are forms of #green_colonialism.

#DHARALI_DISASTER
On Aug 5, a flash flood buried Dharali village in Uttarakhand under 40–60 ft of sediment. Several remain missing. Do read my @MongabayIndia article on why this disaster was not natural.
-From just 4 buildings in 1996, Dharali grew into a hub for tourists, pilgrims, locals, & labourers. Hotels, homestays, & resorts mushroomed, many of which were destroyed in the flood.
-Dharali has faced flash floods before too, including a devastating one in 2013. Yet locals told me that more buildings came up after 2013.
-Another looming risk: LANDSLIDES. To widen NH-34 (road to Gangotri), ~6,000 deodar trees are marked to be cut. Many of these trees are near Dharali and stabilise slopes. Cutting them will destabilise the terrain, yet the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is pushing for the felling of these trees.

Take some time to watch our film, where @kri_tikka brewed magic into our travel across 200 km in bengal & Sikkim. What is it like to live in the shadow of glacial lakes and hydropower projects? Especially, when the two are a bad combo.

Caste in India is not just cultural, it is material. It shapes access to land, water, housing, sanitation, and protection from climate disasters. Dalit and Adivasi communities, already pushed to the margins, are among the most affected by climate change.
