The liberal consensus is cohered around an outdated paradigm of anti-racism, anti-fascism. It doesn't know how to deal with intolerance, religious fundamentalism and sectarianism which are the real challenges to societal cohesion today. We're in a spiral with a clueless elite.

Apparently, being cited by someone on the ‘hard right’ is now enough to make you guilty by association.
That is the Guardian’s case against me. It has published an article about my opposition to the Church of England’s £100 million slavery reparations scheme, smearing me through supposed links with Restore Britain and associating our campaign with wealthy financiers.
Yet its evidence of my ‘hard right’ connections amounts to a Restore Britain paper citing my work. As for Paul Marshall, he has never funded our campaign.
What about my arguments against reparations? What opposing reasons and evidence did the Guardian offer? None whatsoever.

Pretty grim stuff from an estate in South London where a housing association sold the homes to a property management company which is now attempting to push through evictions and convert the houses to HMOs
All the bottled water at Ocado is out of stock. I wasn't prepping. I don't see the point. But just looking to place my regular order. If we had a real crisis rather than an imaginary one we'd be screwed. Although the two overlap now. A lot of the scaremongering over Covid was

The fact that this merits comment suggests just how censorious & stifling the policing of online expression has become. It WAS Think Before You Post & You Can't Say That. Now it's Think Before You Like & You Can't Like That.
🚨 NEW: Nigel Farage says Reform candidates will not be banned for liking Tommy Robinson posts.
• Nigel Farage has said candidates for Reform UK will not be prevented from standing if they like social media posts by Tommy Robinson.
• Speaking on Radio 4’s Today programme, the Reform leader said: “I wouldn’t ban anybody for liking someone like Tommy Robinson. Wouldn’t be my cup of tea, but I wouldn’t ban anybody from doing so.”
• He added that he does not want the party to get into a world of cancel culture, though he would act if someone supported something outright wrong.
• Farage said any response would depend on the specific post. “I’m not going to run a party where we say ‘you can’t talk about that person or that person.’ We have to be sensible about vetting, and we are.”
• Farage claimed the party vets its council candidates to a much higher level than any other political party.

Jonathan says 67 seats against Netanyahu in a Knesset of 120 is a landslide, and that the reason nobody treats it as one goes back to the founding of the state: Arab parties did not sit in government, a taboo built on mutual suspicion rather than prejudice alone.

Everything that Burnham/Healey say screams early election. This is likely as good as it gets for the Government on the economy, still lots of spending cuts to be done in unprotected departments, big fiscal drag effect still to come, and Burnham wants a proper mandate
On balance I come down on the same side of the line as Simon, but maybe for a slightly different reason.
I don't think it is practical to deliver the sort of radical changes needed at this budget both for external reasons (current external shock on headroom) & internal reasons (this government simply hasn't had time to develop sufficiently credible & detailed policies, rushing would do more harm than good on balance).
I think the real test comes in following months on: 10 year strategy, welfare reform, spending review. These three together do need to signify a more radical approach to solving the major structural challenges facing the UK economy.

Is this the end of Netanyahu?
My essay for @unherd on the existential question this projected hung Knesset is asking of the Israeli opposition: what kind of democracy is Israel?
Every Israeli has woken up knowing the existential question this projected hung Knesset, with Arab parties as kingmakers, is asking of them: what kind of democracy is Israel? But one thing is clear. This election was a referendum on Netanyahu himself, and he seems to have lost that poll. It looks like the Bibi bloc has collapsed from a 68-seat majority in the last Knesset, to a minority this morning. Early numbers suggest most Israeli voters have rejected him and his allies. We will have to wait until Thursday for final results, and these may well prove slightly different.

On paper Netanyahu has gone down to a crushing defeat
But, absurdly, he is still in power this morning because the opposition refuse to ally with Arab-Israeli politicians

In all the reporting I’ve done in Arab communities during the campaign the same sentiment came up - “this time the turnout will be much higher because of Bibi and Ben-Gvir’s racist policies” - will be an incredible irony if their legacy is greater Arab participation

#France "seems to be on the front line of a phenomenon now spreading across Europe, and perhaps throughout the entire West: an explosion of nihilism... a social movement that seeks not to bring about one kind of society or another but, instead, no society at all.”
The violent protests are “not directed against this or that injustice, but against the very idea of justice—a revolt not against this or that government, but against the very idea of an organized society.”

Good article on what's at stake for Israel in tomorrow's election. A lot of commentary focuses on Gaza and the West Bank or Iran and geopolitics. But what of Israel itself? Israeli society, Israeli democracy? And the divisive politics since October 7th?
