Huge problem: when a client's AI-search visibility is not translating into enough demos.
The default reaction: "GEO isn't working."
Or worse, "We tried GEO but it's just not worth it."
There's three bigger questions to answer here:
1. What's the real reason why inbound demand is down? Blaming GEO is a convenient scapegoat.
2. If you stop investing in SEO/GEO, what are you going to do instead to grow the business?
3. Plenty of other channels do not drive attributable demo requests. Would you also say those programs are not worth it?
I know plenty of companies that are running ads for "visibility" (not direct response conversions) yet they continue investing in those programs because they believe it reaches the correct ICP and influences sales.
I've heard some marketers say "more ads" is the antidote for GEO.
This is a weird argument.

The only marketing skill that's going to remain is copywriting. Plan accordingly.

Hot take (that will make everyone fight):
If you are young and ambitious, you are better off being in ANY city in America vs 99% of Europe.
Sure London beats Columbus Ohio.
But outside of like 4 cities in Europe, any mid sized city in the USA has a better chance of making you rich

Jim rohn said it best - when you are at the beach, be at the beach. When you are at your job, be at your job. But don't be at the beach while thinking about your job.

The older I get, the more I realize that the single greatest challenge for any ambitious person is eliminating the guilt associated with free time and rest.

So the role “director of digital marketing” is really just a glorified project manager?
They manage down: agencies, contractors and junior marketers who are doing all the execution work (including reporting).
They manage up: VP / CMO and other cross functional leaders. Basically just a shit load of meetings and talking.
Can someone enlighten me? Am I wrong?

I’m being more mindful of signal vs noise when it comes to my online presence.
I’m prioritizing fewer social posts / fewer things I’m sharing / fewer Substack posts / fewer guest posts / fewer podcast interviews, etc… but I’m aiming to make each thing I publish more heavy hitting and impactful.
The idea is that if I only publish one Substack post per month, it’s gotta be a banger.
If I only do 3-4 podcast appearances per year, they should be in-person, high production value and hyper aligned with an audience that will care, irrespective of the size of the audience.
There’s just WAY too much noise. Too many “hot takes” and low effort rants.
Need to separate myself from all the cruft.

Never destroy your mental and physical health for a company that would terminate you instantly if it meant a few extra cents on their share price.

Client of mine is looking to hire an absolute BEAST product marketer. B2B cybertech. Remote role. Salary range is $180K USD. Who out there fits the bill?

No one is doing as well as you think they are.
But you’re not doing as well as they think you are.
So, you’re doing better than you think but worse than they think.

E don sup, E don sup… let’s get out of it.

"Citation rate" is such a weasel talking point for GEO vendors. They are pushing companies to optimize around this metric and it drives the wrong incentives.
Ex. "let's scale content to increase our citation rate"
That's like the equivalent of saying:
"let's scale content to get more pages indexed"
Citation rate is merely existing. Why should that be celebrated?

i think they just have their plate so full with product and campaigns (usually outbound, aligned with sales) that it is straight up impossible for them to muster the sustained focus, often over years, to win in this channel
you either a) build a content team whose dna is inbound (hubspot, zapier, ahrefs, etc) or b) make two teams or c) fail.

Content for SEO/AEO needs to be managed and executed by a special strategic unit.
If you've ever worked with large companies you'll know they have an internal "content team" but here's what they are working on:
- Product launch posts
- Product use case blogs
- Industry content "AI for banking"
- Customer stories
- Event roundups
- Webinar recaps
- "Integrated campaigns"
- Top of funnel "thought leadership"
- Sales enablement
They don't work on things that will drive SEO/AEO impact like:
- Versus pages
- X best lists
- Buyer's guides
- Solutions pages
- Transaction pages
- Videos that influence conversion
- Tools & calculators
- Expert / in-depth reviews
You cannot rely on the internal "content team" for this.
It's not going to work.
