🇨🇦 ON THIS DAY IN CANADIAN HISTORY 🇨🇦 🚂 OCTOBER 27, 1856 — MONTREAL AND TORONTO CONNECTED BY RAIL! 170 YEARS AGO TODAY! On this day in 1856, the Grand Trunk Railway began regular passenger service between Montréal and Toronto, marking a major milestone in Canadian transportation history. For the first time, travellers could journey between the two cities entirely by train, completing the trip in approximately 14 hours. Before the railway, travelling overland by stagecoach could take as long as five days! Two passenger trains departed that historic morning, one from Montréal and the other from Toronto, travelling in opposite directions. They met near Kingston, where a brief ceremony marked the occasion before both continued toward their destinations. The Grand Trunk Railway had been incorporated in 1852, and its ambitious construction program helped connect communities, move goods, deliver mail and transform commerce throughout the Province of Canada, more than a decade before Confederation. The railway would eventually become one of North America’s great transportation networks, with its legacy forming part of today’s Canadian National Railway system. What once took days could now be accomplished in less than one.
