Classical education was built around a simple idea: A young person should learn how to think before being told what to think. That meant studying: — Logic to recognize bad arguments — Rhetoric to express ideas clearly — History to understand human nature — Philosophy to examine difficult questions — Literature to understand other people — Mathematics to develop reasoning These subjects were not merely preparation for employment. They were preparation for life.

The happiest people I've met don't necessarily have the easiest lives or the most impressive accomplishments. But they tend to have four things in common: -They take their faith or life philosophy seriously. -They invest in their family relationships. -They cultivate real friendships. -They find meaning in work that creates value and serves others. These are the four areas of life worth paying attention to if you want to live a more fulfilling life.

No matter which party controls Congress, spending goes up. The uniparty is in the driver’s seat, and the bills keep getting bigger. My Six Penny Plan would cut six cents off every projected dollar that the federal government spends, and balance the budget in 5 years. It’s not complicated. Washington just needs the will to do it.

Friends, I don’t think we Christians fully understand how radically we must think about the goal of the Christian life. It is not to become a nice person. An atheist can be a nice person. The goal is to become a new creation, someone living the very life of God. Jesus is the Son of God by nature, but we become sons and daughters of God by adoption, brought into a share in his life like a child welcomed into a family and their home. That’s what it means to be a saint: to be invited into the household of God, and to worship God by eating and drinking the body and blood of Jesus, becoming assimilated unto him.

The big wrong turn, as I see it, was the vast cultural and spiritual shift that came of defining ourselves by our pasts, our injuries, instead of by our destinies, our potentials. The idea became to repair, repair, not to prepare and strive. Therapy overtook destiny. "Don't look back." An ancient warning, ignored. But we are not the sum of what's happened to us, as individuals or groups; we are the carriers of what is possible for us -- as we divine it and go out to meet it. Instead of obsessing on its own roots a tree should grow toward the sun.

Priest said something at mass last week that stuck with me. He said he often says this prayer, “Lord lead me where you need me…”. My favorite Mennonite preacher,Russel Krabill told us when we were young to say this prayer. “Help me to do as you would have us to do”. I’ve never forgot that. Both are an acknowledgment of accepting guidance from God.

This is the Great Isaiah Scroll, copied around 125 BC, more than a century before the birth of Jesus. It is one of the Dead Sea Scrolls and preserves all 66 chapters of Isaiah. Among its passages is Isaiah 53, describing a suffering servant who bears the sins of others. Christians recognize this as a prophecy fulfilled in the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Part of that passage reads as follows: “But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities.” Isaiah 53:5 What makes this scroll so remarkable is that it physically preserves these words in a manuscript copied before Jesus walked the earth. The prophecy Christians read today was already being copied and preserved long before the crucifixion.

Fascinating to me that there are some folks out there (like Peter Singer) who want to take personhood away from infants and those with dementia while at the same time there are also people out there who want to grant personhood to machines
Replying to @Pontifex
Machines are tools, not persons. Today, some propose granting these systems rights, or even legal personhood. Such an approach risks obscuring human responsibility and leaving those who suffer harm to confront a faceless entity.
