ALT 𝐖𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬 Seven months pregnant, in August, I waddled from work to Wholefoods, testing if my ankles could hold me upright long enough in the frozen aisle to get goosebumps. That summer, I bought oranges, and orange juice, and orange paletas. I kept a can opener and a fork in my car to eat tins of room-temperature french-cut green beans. I drank a gallon of milk every day. And I walked, green beans or orange peel in hand, around the Railyard Park, lifting bags of mulch digging into the three sisters' garden, opening the acequia gate. No one said rest, put your feet up, don’t work so hard. No one told me I shouldn’t, so I did all these things and sang to her: Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé mostly, but sometimes songs I made up about how happy she and I would be, how I was going to try very hard not to fuck everything up, and about how, when she was real, I would take her to buy an orange in Wholefoods and she would say oh yes, I remember this place.
