"We don't take an oath to a king, or queen, or a tyrant or a dictator. And we don't take an oath to a wannabe dictator ...we take an oath to the Constitution ... and we're willing to die to protect it".

I’m grateful to Matt Yglesias for his tireless, Sisyphean work in repeatedly emphasizing obviously true points to people who have a strong vested interest in never, ever admitting that what he’s saying is accurate.

I think Republicans should be aware that D+13 is not the bottom.
Trump is spiraling. Stephen Miller is the new CoS, Bald Tomato Fight Man might be the press secretary. Trump might be *more* unhinged the rest of the way, no upper limit.
Things can still get worse for the GOP.

🚨BAAJA now includes Nuclear (!!) and help for communities dealing with data centers!
In addition to technical fixes and important concessions to Tribal interests, the BAAJA amendment adds cool new several new provisions! 🧵
1. Nuclear: A whole new title with targeted fixes for nuclear
– Removes requirements for trial-style hearings if nobody requests one
– Allows companies to begin preliminary construction before final licensing (operation still requires licensing)
– Clarifies timelines for licensing decisions
– Allows NRC to pay officials more in order to hire more senior staff
2. Program to support communities dealing with data centers:
– New program at DOE to provide communities with information on the costs and effects of data centers.
– DOE is required to support individual communities that request info on how data centers will affect local electricity, water, the local economy, etc.
3. Fix for wildfire prevention
– The Clean Air Act puts limits on air particulate pollution that states have to stay under. Current rules say "exceptional events" like wildfires do not count towards those limits
– Prescribed burns are intentional fires used to clear underbrush and prevent disastrous wildfires.
– Current rules do not always exempt prescribed burns from counting towards clean air limits, disincentivizing states from conducting important wildfire prevention
– The new amendment fixes this, allowing controlled burns to count as an "exceptional event"
4. Reauthorizing brownfield clean up:
– The bipartisan infrastructure law created a program for cleaning up abandoned industrial sites. That program's authorization lapsed in 2023
– BAAJA authorizes the program through 2031 up to $200M per year.

Interesting add here: establishes a Data Center Community Assistance Program at DOE to provide State, local, and Tribal governments w/ technical assistance on the potential energy, water, infrastructure, economic, and other community impacts associated w/ data center development

I’m no BAAJA expert but if Americans just voted for Democrats bc they think they’re gonna bring prices down then the *dumbest* thing for a Dem politician to do is turn around and vote against something that will bring prices down

Yeah, there will be no pivot to the center. This is what you get when you have an 80-year-old president who doesn't really gaf about the future of the Republican Party.

NEW: @RepDavids, one of the few elected Native Americans, is "breaking with her party’s leadership to demand swift action on critical permitting reform," her office says in press release. Davids, a member of @NewDems, adds she is working with negotiators to "fix" NHPA provisions

Totally fine of course if Jeffries is negotiating in good faith and intends on passing a bill that House Democrats get to lend their input to.
Not great if he is trying to poison the Senate effort by going public with his grievances – there is no chance Democrats pass permitting reform in 2027 and get it signed by Trump.
It is now or never, and we can't wait.

Sen. Martin Heinrich is pushing back on calls to delay permitting reform until next year.
“I’m not going to wait,” he said simply, calling this the closest Congress has come to a deal that can become law.

Gallego defends Schumer, says he deserves to be majority leader:
"Schumer got us there. At times it wasn't pretty, but we landed this plane and we landed very well and we're about to hit 56 seats. I think he's earned a return."

On permitting reform, Gallego thinks Dems should pass BAAJA now:
"Six months from now, after a [possible] impeachment, maybe [the White House] won't be willing to negotiate, or maybe we get too close to an election and Vance doesn't want to negotiate, right? So why not take this win now?"

GOP has been trying to convince everyone for 15 years that Rubio is some sort of transcendent figure but I've yet to see any evidence of that. Rubio will have trouble distancing himself from an unpopular incumbent admin just like Vance. Kamala Harris had same problem.
