"We disabled PIE on nodejs for a 0.3% perf win on an obsolete register-starved architecture that is used by nobody"
Replying to @julianor
nodejs linux official builds are no-pie by default for perf reasons. some distributions like debian/alpine rebuild node, which can enable pie
here's a tracking issue for it: github.com/nodejs/node/issue…

I got confirmation that the original version just had an index.html. So there never was any php code executed hahaha.
But they added now an actual .php file (like 18h after they started the challenge. So the 21 hours without successful hack is misleading)
Now it should be exploitable.
But of course it’s incredibly hard to do so when the service gets hammaered and crashing like crazy. Keep in mind, tons and tons of php service don’t get hammered like this. So if somebody gets it now, then that’s actually crazy!

What makes this depressing is that it theoretically met NIMBY criteria.
Aesthetic, built with local stone, provides cheap groceries during a cost-of-living crisis. All built *literally* on an empty grass field.
But, no dice. They don't actually want to build anything at all.

McGill’s law school receives roughly 1,500 applications for just 180 spots.
It gave one of those spots to a convicted murderer in his mid-60s, who will never pass the good character requirements to practice, and who violated his parole multiple times.

While Zucman ponders why on earth billionnaires would react to a one-time 5% wealth tax and consider leaving California, back in France, his mentor is advocating for a combined package of 800bn euros, including a 50% tax on all gains exceeding 100 millions over the past 10 years.

It's the same pretty much everywhere with rent controls. A story from Berlin:
True in Spain too. Every landlord in Madrid and Barcelona screens the renters now. This is an obvious consequence of rent control. The most vulnerable, ostensible protected by the legislation, are in fact excluded from the rental market: if you cannot be evicted for non payment, then you are too risky a renter.

rent control as commonly implemented is straightforward incumbency protection which naturally advantages old people and those who will not have to upgrade housing when they get jobs or start families

Its funny seeing how conversations about multi tenanted hypervisors not being able to truly isolate tenants due to hardware side channels are now becoming common due to AI , when anyone who has seriously been in that area has known this for years.
