Karen knew
In "Out of Africa" (1937), Karen Blixen describes Kikuyu customs and mentality through a colonial lens. On their character: "The Kikuyu, when left to themselves, do not bury their dead, but leave them above ground for the hyenas and vultures to deal with." She equates natives to animals, implying lower intelligence: "What I learned from the game of the country was useful to me in my dealings with the native people." Note: She viewed Somalis more favorably as "superior in culture and intelligence" in her later book "Shadows on the Grass."
