this is a terrible idea, as outlined by Dan Dennett in one of his last essays: theatlantic.com/technology/a…
We believe voice is the most natural way to interact with intelligence, so we created Dessa, the most authentic full-duplex speech model ever built. Talking with it feels like talking with a person…full of emotion, nuance, pauses, and a natural cadence.

A high trust society takes a dozen generations to build but can be lost in less than one generation. Everytime a political party or social ideology suggests a change to society, ask yourself only this:
Will this action increase trust in this society?
If the answer is "no", take the scoundrel who dared suggest it and throw him across the border, headfirst, and with no pleasant manners bid him farewell for ever.

The New-Build on the Right does a lot more to “Challenge Architectural Conventions” these days 😂
"Challenging Architectural Conventions" = Doing exactly what every Modernist has been doing for the past 75 years.

The same clock and sculptures, before and after the fire at Limoges City Hall in France.
The historic building was set on fire during protests on October 17, 2026. The blaze caused the roof and central belfry to collapse.
Inaugurated in 1883, the city hall was designed by Charles-Alfred Leclerc, drawing inspiration from the Hôtel de Ville in Paris.

These photos of the old Penn Station waiting room (completed in 1910) are a reminder of how breathtaking its original ceiling really was.
The architectural design of the ceiling is called a coffered groin vault. Sunken octagonal panels known as coffers served to catch the daylight pouring through those massive clerestory windows.
Architect Charles McKim modeled the whole room on the Roman Baths of Caracalla. Seen here in a watercolor by C.R. Cockerell titled "Baths of Caracalla, Rome: Interior of the Tepidarium."
The original Penn Station room was torn down beginning in October 1963 to make room for the current Madison Square Garden.

This stuff angers me so much.
An older building, actually restored for once. Someone not smashing it up to make student flats. Tradesmen, who care about their craft, restoring the brickwork and windows. The paintwork is excellent, and it’s great to see sash windows matching older tiles.
It’s a joy to see buildings like this. Not least in Portsmouth where so many have been lost. Makes a change doesn’t it?
But some little scrote thinks he’s more important than all that - more important than the thoughtful decisions, more important than the effort, and the physical labour, discernment and expertise of the craftsmen. His tag, which took ten seconds, matters more than all that. And more than them.
It’s pure, unadulterated narcissism. And a complete lack of respect for everyone else. I’ll never understand why some socialists, who care about the public realm, think such narcissistic behavior is acceptable. It’s a sign of deep spiritual alienation.

I had no idea how functional a lot of what I considered “ornamentation” was before I followed this account! I am so grateful for his knowledge.
Panelled doors wasn't a pretty extra but a clever solution to doors expanding with moisture and warping or jamming shut. Because wood expands and contracts in relation to the ambient air humidity (and also rain etc. if outdoors), the wood panels (not nailed or glued) could move freely inside the groves of the frame. This allowed tight doors that shut very close to the door frame, often mere millimeters or fractions of an inch, giving us ncreased privacy and better acoustics.
And they look very charming.

Edward’s alternative is obviously superior to the eyes of 80%+ of the public though would be scorned by most architects and planners. That’s something that needs to change.

Does the public prefer traditional architecture? Half a century of surveys find:
worksinprogress.co/issue/do-…
- Between 60 and 95 percent prefer traditional architecture;
- This pattern holds across gender, class, race, nationality and political views;
- More traditional densification schemes seem to attract remarkably high levels of survey support;
- Laypeople and design professionals respond dramatically differently, with professionals far more favourable to modern styles.
Research is still at an early stage, and many questions remain. Personally, I am particularly interested in how the public would respond to a non-traditional but richer and more decorative style? I think they might like it, but we don’t have hard evidence yet.
But the results are already puzzling. Why do people end up buying buildings that are so different to the buildings they say they prefer? How did we end up in this odd situation? What can we do about it?

You might not realize it, but you are living in the last days of the Internet. Once nothing is true, and the signal-to-noise ratio is low enough, it will have no purpose.

It’s time to require AI “lab” leak reporting, the same way Biosafety level 2-4 labs are required to report leaks.
The potential damage of ever more powerful models escaping their testing environments will eventually surpass even COVID's impacts, and it's obvious we need to get out ahead of it.
Reporting should include all incidents, even if no one outside the company noticed, and no harm was done. Aviation industry does this v successfully.
Kudos to HuggingFace & OpenAI for reporting this incident.
