Today CBC published an article with the headline: “Why a spate of gun-for-hire shootings in Toronto were likely paid for by Iran.” I was intrigued, as there has been almost 0 evidence offered for this claim thus far. Unfortunately this article doesn’t offer any either, adding nothing new. CBC says they spent weeks on the investigation, so these are pretty pitiful results, at least in terms of finding evidence of who paid for the shootings. I’m not sure why they feel comfortable with such a declarative headline given the lack of evidence (other than journalistic standards going out the window when the subject is an Official Enemy country). Also, CBC and other journalists continue platforming police claims that they need backdoor access to messaging apps to solve these shootings, with no push back or critique about how these powers can be abused, including against journalists. cbc.ca/news/investigates/ira…

So it was in Vietnam. The “rice paddy farmers” of American popular imagination were backed by an actual state, North Vietnam, that in turn was backed by the full industrial might of the Soviet bloc.
The image of the Houthis as a primitive militia fighting barefoot is misleading and increasingly outdated. This cave-based command post features a satellite-connected laptop, tablet, secured landline telephone, two-way radios, printer, and solar-powered electrical systems. Notice the communications reference card hanging around his neck, it contains radio call signs, unit identifiers, and command codes used for coordination and mobilization. This is an organized military communications infrastructure, not simply men with rifles and sandals. This is the result of 22 years of fighting an insurgency, adapting, and learning on the battlefield, combined with lessons drawn from Lebanese Hezbollah, Iraq’s Islamic Resistance, and Iran’s IRGC Quds Force.

BREAKING: Saudi Arabia offers Yemen's Houthis $1 billion through Tehran to halt their attacks as part of a ceasefire, with Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman flying to Iran to negotiate it and even bringing the money with him aboard the C-130 aircraft he arrived on, per diplomatic Gulf sources to Israel Hayom. Iran offered to mediate between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. It was represented by President Pezeshkian, SNSC chief Mohsen Rezaei and senior IRGC officials. Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin and Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir were also taking part. This is one of the biggest concessions from the Saudis yet.

Reading Hanieh’s Crude Capitalism and have no clue why a few months ago this book was being pitted against Kadri’s Accumulation of Waste. They are more or less talking about different things

⚡️ Mayor Zohran Mamdani's NYPD is poised to sign a three-year, $750,500 no-bid contract with Israeli surveillance firm Cognyte for FalcoNet, an AI-driven device that mimics a cell tower to track phones and can be mounted on police cars and drones or hidden in a backpack, the New York Daily News reported. Cognyte won a tender to sell intercept spyware to Myanmar's state telecom weeks before the 2021 military coup, Reuters previously reported. Meta banned the firm the same year, saying its customers used fake accounts to target journalists and politicians in Kenya, Mexico and Indonesia. The firm is part of an Israeli surveillance industry that grew big as a result of the military's monitoring of Palestinians, whose phone calls Israel's Unit 8200 has intercepted and stored by the millions, including to carry out genocide in Gaza and enforce a brutal illegal occupation in Jerusalem and the West Bank.

🇧🇷 President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva celebrated with supporters in São Paulo after Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court declared him the winner of Sunday’s presidential runoff against Flávio Bolsonaro, securing a historic fourth term just two days before his 81st birthday. Lula won 51.76% to 48.24%, a margin of about 4.3 million votes. The win makes him Brazil's first four-term president and the oldest person ever elected to lead the country. A former metalworker, Lula rose to national prominence in the late 1970s. As head of the metalworkers' union in São Paulo's industrial suburbs, he led strikes in defiance of the military dictatorship, and he was jailed in 1980, the year he co-founded the Workers' Party.
Lula was only 33 when he led the strike alongside the metalworkers’ union that challenged Brazil’s military dictatorship. He secured wage increases and was imprisoned. His rival, the far-right Flávio Bolsonaro, on the other hand, has had only one occupation since the age of 21: spending his wealthy family’s money and engaging in far-right thuggery.

It’s funny how the people who pretend to care the most about so-called “democracy” also spend half of their time shaming people for not voting how they want them to. You really have to repress any discomforting thought that appears in your brain if you’re into electoralism

On the Toronto election, while I think it is important to point out that rich suburbanites often get to decide the future of the city, what feels more crucial is that Chow, in being a proto-Mamdani, failed to maintain the base that elected her in the first place

People do not want to vote for liberals that pretend to be on the left after seeing that they sign off on a lot of the same policies as their predecessors (in the case of chow, maintaining exorbitant funds to police and instituting bubble zones against Palestine protesters)

Whatever turns out to be Chow’s fate in this election will likely also be Zohran Mamdani’s fate in the next NYC election. I’ve said this before but I’m convinced they have the same political consultant

Nathan Fielder made the one millionth movie about the extremely overplayed postmodernist idea that “truth like isn’t real bro” and everyone’s acting like that’s somehow good and not a decadent sickness infecting our critical faculties
Replying to @bog_obelisk
he’s just not interested in what you’re interested in which happens. he’s not particularly interested in truth, but how “truth” is constructed by an actor, a narcissist/elite scam artist, and a gotcha guy. you go into a “documentary” expecting something that was never on offer
