So either the current or next generation of models is the last time the general public will ever get access to the frontier from the US labs, right?

More private keys by the Indian certificate authority have been discovered. These are all small numbers.
People are suspecting that they interpreted 384 bit keys to mean that they should pick numbers from 1-384 to use as their private keys.

I think that’s a very rude way to refer to AT&T’s core network.

Hugely important point
a16z crypto's Eddy Lazzarin and Stanford's Dan Boneh on how AI's math leap could turn a decade of trust-building in cryptography into one month:
Eddy: "We specifically rely in some sense on time... We put these schemes out and we wait. And we wait because what we believe is happening is that experts, like cryptographers and mathematicians, are testing and trying to break these things."
"Because of the pace of progress on AI's mathematical abilities, there is a conspicuous absence of time... A whole new well of cognitive ability to scrutinize has appeared."
Dan: "In the past, when someone would make an assumption and build a system based on it, we'd have to wait like 10 years before that system could be deployed."
"Now we can just let a model run for a month, try to break it, and if the model can't break it, boy, do we have a lot of confidence that the assumption is valid."
Eddy: "The labs can say, 'We took our tip-top, totally unrestricted, most cyber-capable model, and we told it to go absolutely insane, and we spent $20 million, $50 million trying to break this scheme.'"
"We actually have the prospect to have more confidence in our security than ever before."

I think Anthropic play here is:
1. Force western labs to keep frontier models private, gaining RSI cycles advantage and making it harder for China to catch up by distilling.
2. Heavily restrict open weights models as "unsafe".

This is what I have been telling everyone who will listen.
The most valuable thing the frontier labs can now do for crypto (and math more broadly) is publish their *negative* results. What ideas they tried, how much compute they used, and what obstacles they found.

And specifically for cryptanalysts who are working with models and for the labs:
Folks, what we need right now are *negative* results. Silence is the worst thing you could be publishing.

Presenting: "Small, But Not Zero"
An opera explaining the integer multiplication math journey up to this point.
Validated and merged Rohan's PR. Big gain on a really difficult regime (that frankly I was stuck at). Incredible work.
κ = 2⁻¹⁵ (tightened from κ = 2⁻¹⁸²)
A 500 thousand fold improvement over the previous result and a 2 ^ 167 fold improvement over the original OpenAI result.
This result was a true community effort that combined techniques from a number of contributors. I want to take time to highlight each of them, but for now getting these results verified and published as fast as possible so everyone working on the problem is at the leading edge.
Should we hold an AI cryptographic competition? In the event that AI breaks crypto --- something we have no evidence for other than folks who don't know what they are talking about trying to sell you something or make it about them --- can AI make new cryptography? Can AI make new assumptions, hash functions, or symmetric ciphers?

"Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done" might become one of the historical quotes from this era, perfectly depicting the downfall of academia

I’ve had a few people write to ask me to follow up on a (reply!) tweet I wrote that’s gotten a lot of retweets. I considered deleting it just to avoid the headache, but I think that would make people more paranoid. So let me share my thoughts.

omg, Anthropic. You suck. And because of paternalism, which is the specifically most annoying kind of suck. I can't wait until another company makes a better AI than Claude. But, yeah, Claude is currently the best. :-{
