In the wake of the horrific alleged attack on Helen Haines, witches, everyone and their dog have quickly jumped to find reasons why this diabolical act occurred.
From increasing aggression towards politicians to failures in social media discourse to failures of mental health to a worrying “cooker” mentality in that part of the country, everyone has their theories.
Yet except for a few on social media (including MFW), few commenting are willing to look the elephant in the room in the face. Which is this: although the alleged crime in question hasn’t been shown to be an overt act of violence against women, the clear fact is that men who want to harm someone so often choose a woman or women to hurt and few individual men choose to attack either a man or group of men.
The reasons are obvious: for aggrieved men, women (and sometimes children) are a soft target for their unbridled fury. And for women, this is in itself … devastating.
In last Saturday’s SMH, though, there was a single paragraph which alluded to a possible motive (or part-motive) for alleged attacker Brendan Nugent. It’s this:
“Those close to Nugent say he started smoking marijuana in his teens, and his mental health began to unravel in his 20s, but they hadn’t noticed any signs of extremism. Others, including neighbours, have described years of aggression and violence from Nugent, particularly targeted at women. When the Haines attack happened, Wangaratta police were already investigating a report that he had menaced a woman with a claw hammer last month following an alleged road rage incident near the town.”
smh.com.au/politics/federal/…?
So whether it’s true Nugent is mentally or physically unwell (not a reason for violence) or had some kind of beef with Helen Haines or his family or politicians in general (still not a reason for violence), if any of the above quote is true it would make sense. Because when violent men get out of control, they so often seek to harm those they believe can’t or won’t fight back.
We could point to so many crimes both here and overseas to demonstrate this point. There’s an epidemic of violence against women ATM, and most of those in positions of power refuse to name it, let alone fix it. In fact, far from “turning down the temperature”, most of Australia’s politicians and media class STOKE the burning fires, by refusing to condemn the violent slaughter of tens of thousands of Palestinians, or joyfully sucking up to verbally violent pricks like Sandilands, or taking grinning selfies with endlessly violent Trump, or eagerly broadcasting the misrepresentations of allegedly violent war criminal BRS, or even refusing to prosecute those responsible for thousands of deaths via their criminal incompetence on Robodebt and aged care and restrictions on the healthcare of veterans and NDIS recipients, amongst much other fuckery.
THE VIOLENCE IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE FUCKING HOUSE, ALBO.
And sure, it’s now replicated and amplified on social media and in people’s everyday lives, but that’s because of the DEVASTATING EXAMPLE SET BY OUR POLITICAL MASTERS. And most of all, all this violence rebounds on women. And on their children. And on those in minority groups who must listen to themselves being endlessly vilified by people like Hanson, with no valid recourse.
Because Australia, both politicians and the media REFUSE to do the things which must be done to stop this violence. Since those things are always too scary, too hard, too expensive, or too difficult for those (such as Murdoch, Stokes and others) who don’t WANT women to have more influence so who’ll retain the bloodthirsty power they’ve built up over past decades by any means necessary, violent or otherwise.
And who’ve so comprehensively bought or cowed the politicians they own we all pay the fucking price.
This is why it’s left to MFW to today say the unsayable. It’s not much, and it’s nowhere near enough, but if we don’t say it loud and clear, who the fuck will?

A lovely surprise from my @10NewsSyd colleagues as I call time on nearly 50 years as a news reporter. A flashback reel (I won’t call them highlights). Thanks for watching. I now retreat to my tomatoes.

When I was 21 I applied for a permanent job in the marketing department of a big Queensland company. I had zero marketing experience. What I had was a pink suit.
This was the early 2000s, so instead of a normal resume I made a slideshow of photos of me doing fun things. If they laughed, fine. Wasn’t that the point?
Then one day the managers from that department walked into the call centre where I worked and stood there watching me answer phones. That’s when I realised a normal resume would have kept my face out of it.
I got the interview anyway, so I committed. Pink blazer, short pink skirt, and underneath, because it was the era of the Thong Song, a g-string. I’d prepared a presentation. I walked to the front of the boardroom to set up the projector, caught my foot on the edge of the table and went over. The skirt went up. A room full of men got a good look at my dental floss.
You’d think that would be the worst moment of a young woman’s life. But I had form. In high school I tried something fancy on the parallel bars, my gym shorts got caught, and the whole class saw my undies. They were pink too. After that my nickname was Pink Undies.
I got up and finished the presentation. It was awful. I didn’t get the job. A lovely woman with an actual marketing degree did, and she was great at it.
I carried that day around for years like a stone in my pocket.
Here’s what I know now. Shame tells you everyone is still thinking about your worst moment. They aren’t. Most people are too busy carrying their own stone.
And the girl in the pink suit was brave. She tried something nobody else tried, fell flat on her face, then stood up and kept talking.
These days I wear Bridget Jones granny undies and tell this story at dinner parties. I laugh so hard I regret every Kegel I skipped.
Grace has a sense of humour.

We don’t do what we do purely to get rid of the shitfucked gobshites who’ve (till recently) dominated the Australian media, witches.
We also do it because our campaign successes embolden other groups to believe that they, too, can achieve something important simply by getting organised, banding together, and fighting bigotry, misogyny, hatred and the violent power of disgusting men in politics and business wherever they dominate others who individually can’t fight back.
Every day now, we watch determined groups collectively fight injustice. Not all are influenced by MFW, of course (or even know of our existence), but all give hope to their own communities and give voice to one immutable idea: when large groups of individuals say NOT ON MY FUCKING WATCH, things change.
They don’t always change fast enough or comprehensively enough, of course, but they DO change.
And as this success grows, more and more people decide to also join in to do their bit. This is, essentially, how the world becomes better. Indeed, collective consumer action is one of the only (if not THE only) non-violent action which has ever made lasting global change.
There are so many recent examples we could give, but the biggest news today concerns Ed Sheeran. Since as a result of his craven caving to demands to remove Macklemore from his tour over his overt support for Palestine (ostensibly because of pressure from venue owners, notably Epstein-adjacent billionaire Robert Kraft), ALL other support acts for the tour plus Sheeran’s own band have now also withdrawn:
“Ed Sheeran’s opening acts and a touring band have pulled out of his Loop tour after US rapper Macklemore was dropped for expressing support for Palestine on stage. Artists Finneas and Aaron Rowe, Danish band Lukas Graham and Irish folk quintet Beoga posted black-and-grey tiled carousel statements on social media overnight (AEST), supporting Macklemore and Palestine.”
smh.com.au/culture/music/ed-…?
Wow. And bear in mind: this huge public fight and the courage of these acts in withdrawing didn’t occur in a vacuum: they occurred because artists and celebrities are becoming more vocal in their resistance to genocide and mass murder. And THIS is because public opinion is firmly on their side, and they’re increasingly willing (Sheeran, Pink and some others excepted, of course) to do what their fans want rather than what billionaires and Zionists want.
This is the essence of public pressure in action.
And it matters so very, very much.
Now, we wait for the boycotts of Ed’s remaining shows to ramp up (they’ve already started), and the boycotts of Kraft’s teams and stadiums too (he’s not associated with Kraft food products). This will send a REAL message these arseholes won’t ignore: the message to their overly-fat wallets.
And everyone at MFW knows how THAT generally goes for those who think the “ordinary” people who pay their wages will do whatever they’re told.
Not on our fucking watch, they don’t.
So next time someone tells you MFW has done little or nothing to change the world, don’t you dare believe them. What we do matters now more than it ever did, because it shows those who think they have all the power that they don’t, in fact, have nearly as much as they thought. And that their power diminishes by the day while they continue to do what is wrong, what is unjust, and particularly what is blood-thirsty and violent.
We must collectively show those people they hold power only with consent. MFW, and all other similar groups now running boycotts and effective consumer protest actions have changed the narrative, precisely because they (we) have fucking-well had enough.
The quote in the pic from @RandaAFattah yesterday sums this situation today up kinda perfectly. We thank her so much for her important words.
This huge news is delicious, and long-overdue.
Long may such crucial and amazeballs people-power reign.

On the morning of 15th of December 2014, Katrina Dawson walked into the Lindt Cafe in Martin Place, Sydney for a quick coffee with her friend Julie Taylor. Julie was five months pregnant. Katrina was 38, a barrister, a mother of three.
Twenty minutes turned into a hostage siege. A terror attack.
Hours in, the gunman appeared to offer Katrina a way out. Just her.
She wouldn’t leave without Julie.
He said no. One or none.
So she stayed. On the floor next to her pregnant friend, keeping her calm through sixteen hours of terror, in a room with nowhere to hide.
When police stormed the cafe in the early hours of the 16th, Katrina was sadly fatally shot by fragments from the gunfire. She died behind a chair, beside Julie, right where she’d stayed all night.
Julie survived. She had her baby.
Katrina was posthumously awarded the Bravery Medal. Her family started a foundation in her name that’s since funded scholarships for hundreds of women and girls.
She had a way out. She wouldn’t take it alone.
That’s how she’s remembered. The one who stayed.
Bless her beautiful brave soul. 🤍
