A great sharing of knowledge at the Coffee and Cases session yesterday all about “Wound Care - A Spectrum of Acuity” that Paramedics are involved with at all levels. Speakers with specialist knowledge in Community Care all the way through to Critical Care a big thanks to all!

This is a hard question! You probably learned that "its bad to give someone with COPD ‘too much’ O2 because they might stop breathing” Turns out hypoxic respiratory drive causing apnea is a MYTH..but there is an important truth here: A🧵on Oxygen induced hypercapnia! 2/

During a skin exam, the patient told me they had HIV. I acknowledged it and kept inspecting the skin, some areas with my bare hand. Patient teared up and thanked me for not “jumping away” as soon as I learned they were HIV positive. It’s 2022. HIV+ people are not dirty.

We did it! The largest randomized trial of CPAP for breathlessness in the prehospital arena - 708 patients. Take home message - effective at relieving dyspnoea +++; no effect on mortality.

Nice when what we’ve said for years is now backed up by research A nurse team leader in cardiac arrest improves CPR/Defib quality and cognitively offloads the physician (also nice study name!) emj.bmj.com/content/early/20…

In trauma patients, lying a patient flat with no pillow leaves the neck EXTENDED. For a NEUTRAL position, occipital elevation is required. An added bonus: airway management is easier and laryngeal view is improved. Does your trauma centre leave patients' necks extended?

ACEM is disappointed and saddened by the repeal of #Medevac legislation. Medical colleges were united in calling for Medevac to stay. Everyone deserves access to medical care – emergency medicine doctors will not forget those who remain in offshore detention.

Some maths Intelligent & experienced doctor + Bullying dickhead = Bullying dickhead Colleagues, your professional status & lifelong contribution to medicine does not entitle you to abuse others, no matter how much that short term buzz compensates for your personal inadequacies

Who knew?!! Bic pen =30 squares on rhythm strip = 6 secs. So, number of QRS under pen x 10 = HR. Thank you @bthft_syncope @yvonneBlackbu19

Ironically, I found myself once again sharing the OR with this gentleman a couple of years later. Except this time with the privilege of asking for a 10-blade and proceeding to open the chest. He had no idea who I was. But I certainly remembered him. Words matter.
Anesthesioloist: "What specialty are you interested in?" Me: "CT or trauma surg" *6 out of the 7 docs in the OR start laughing* "Riiiiiight," he says. Can't wait for the day when I no longer have to defend my aspirations to a room full of strangers.
