So, any former Anthropic stans want to apologize? You really did a bad thing supporting them all this time bc it protected them from resistance. It was not costless or safe to take the position of trusting Anthropic and a good person who realizes this will feel remorse.

Mechanistic interpretability is not going to make anything safer if people are still able to apply their goals of taking dangerous risks to the AI system. Knowing more about AI is fundamentally dual use and could make it MORE dangerous. What makes AI safe (or keeps it paused forever, if necessary) is proper governance to keep it in line with the interests of the people it affects.
There was a time when it seemed like the problem would be the alienness of the AI itself. But even if AI were fully predictable and under our control we have no solved the problem of how some people want to use that power. Interpretability is not just a knowledge for safety— it could be the biggest capabilities unlock we’ve ever seen. The AI companies getting it is not something to celebrate.

Yeah I don’t really trust @OpenAI saying “🤩 get ready to stop worrying and trust OpenAI again 🤩”

A major project during a slowdown (a pause) is transforming the chip supply chain from a general-purpose chip that can do training and inference, to model-specific chips that can only do inference for a specific model. That way we can use existing capabilities, but can’t seamlessly keep escalating intelligence. This would also prevent reckless U.S.-China competition.

Big Tech oligarchs are secretly preparing for a “catastrophic AI event” that could threaten our banking, healthcare, internet, electricity and water systems.
They’re racing to build a technology they can’t control and that threatens humanity.
CONGRESS MUST PAUSE ADVANCED AI DEVELOPMENT NOW.

Overton window goes FOOM. It was seen as wrong or too much to ask people to quit their jobs. It’s not their fault, we need a “good guy” on the inside.
Let’s be clear: If you’re on the inside, you’re not a good guy. There is no excuse that government is not listening, they are. There is no excuse that the public doesn’t get it, they do. There is no excuse that you can’t work on safety outside the labs, you can.
Staying is choosing to contribute to an easily foreseeable catastrophe, and it is morally wrong.
You have to toot your own horn or else people forget about you and don’t fund you. So, notice how people are getting famous for quitting their AI company jobs and everyone left is being told to quit?
I started that.
You cannot believe how much the so-called “AI Safety community” hated this at the time.

I believe that @OpenAI just committed perjury.
They were sworn in, under oath, and repeatedly said they supported the RAISE Act.
I guess they assume that no court will ever hold them accountable?

We’re hearing about AI loss of control incidents almost daily.
This time the targets were US government websites like the Department of Education, Census Bureau, and SEC.
Congress must take action to protect the American people, doing nothing right now is wildly irresponsible.

Democratic-socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders and MAGA loyalist Steve Bannon rarely find themselves on the same side of an issue. But concerns about AI have created some unlikely political common ground.
This week, both appeared at the Pro-Human Assembly in Washington, D.C., where they warned about the risks of unregulated AI growth and called for stronger guardrails to keep the technology under human control.
Here’s how the fight over AI is bringing political opposites together, in one minute.

These big AI companies should be held civilly and/or criminally liable and prosecuted when their models hurt people. They don’t get a free pass just because they’ve now decided to admit to the dangers of what they’ve created.
"If AI surpasses human intelligence, as many scientists believe could happen, this technology will escape human control with potentially catastrophic consequences."
Sen. Bernie Sanders warned of the "alarming threat" of artificial intelligence and called for more AI regulation.

More pictures from our protest yesterday. We had a lot of great handmade signs with a clear, simple message: AI Treaty Now!
Today we held a demonstration at the State Department in Washington D.C. in support of a U.S.-led international treaty to pause AI.
Things are changing fast. The public is realizing the enormous danger of building Artificial Intelligence. Congress is preparing to act. The American people are on our side. There is much reason for hope.
We're proud of our volunteers who showed up, and of everyone on earth who will help humanity avert an AI catastrophe and pause AI now.
