Do you know the story of Stan Musial and Dickie Kerr?
Kerr, was born in St Louis on July 3, 1893. As manager of the Daytona Beach Islanders, he mentored a young Stan Musial and became Stan's father figure after Stan left Donora, Pa to being his baseball career.
Kerr’s own baseball career was marked by resilience, though he never achieved the fame he deserved due to the Black Sox fallout.
In 1940, Musial, a 19-year-old pitcher for the Daytona Beach Islanders, faced a career crisis after injuring his shoulder diving for a catch, ending his pitching aspirations.
Kerr, recognizing Musial’s hitting talent (.311 in 113 games), encouraged him to switch to the outfield and even invited Musial and his pregnant wife, Lillian, to live with him and his wife, Cora, to ease their financial burden.
This generosity fostered a lifelong friendship.
Kerr and Cora served as witnesses at Musial’s wedding on May 25, 1940, and Musial named his son Richard after Kerr.
In 1958, as Musial approached his 3,000th hit, he repaid Kerr’s kindness by buying him a $20,000 house in Houston, a gesture that highlighted Musial’s character.
On August 20, 1966 before an Old Timers game at the Astrodome in Houston, Musial proudly unveiled a statue of Kerr.
This is an extremely rare photo of Stan with the Kerr statue on that day.
Kerr died on May 4, 1963 at the age of 69 in Houston, TX.
If ever there was an example of Stan's compassion and character, this stands as a prime example.
Stan was a hell of a ballplayer, but he was an even better man. A kind and decent man.

This team is looking scary good.

Is it considered procrastination if you signed a book deal this long ago and still don’t have a completed draft? Asking for a friend of a friend of a friend. Ok, I am my own friend’s friend’s friend so it’s not a complete lie. 😂
