Picking up the mannerisms, sayings and body language of the people we spend a lot of time with is a normal part of intimacy and healthy nervous system relating. When it's conscious and consensual. Without that, it can feel extractive and that makes sense because often it is.

Russell Brand is now a convicted rapist. Understandably, the focus will be on the man himself and what he’s done, but today I’m thinking of the women who came forward. Having gone through a rape trial myself, I know just how much strength is required. Today, they’re my heroes.

Much of your adulthood will be spent dodging miserable people who think they're smarter than you because you're hopeful when they're not. They mistake your strength of spirit for naivete, and preach what has made them despair like it's wisdom. Everything is spiritual warfare.

This is closer to what the actual science says btw. Several decades of research have consistently challenged this stereotype. Only children are not inherently more lonely, anxious or socially maladjusted than children with siblings. Research has generally found no meaningful psychological disadvantage associated with growing up without siblings and there are studies that have even found lower loneliness scores among only children. This is just one instance of people treating cultural assumptions as established psychological facts.
