Paper with Praneet Prakash, Yasa Baig and Francois Peaudecerf on the algae-bacteria microcosm is just out:
pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.24…

ALT Pictured is a composite image showing trajectories of the green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and the distribution of the bacterium Bacillus subtilis. Praneet Prakash, Yasa Baig, et al. created a system in which a shaft of visible light illuminates a thin fluid chamber containing a flagella-less mutant of C. reinhardtii and yellow fluorescently labelled B. subtilis. The illuminated algae photosynthetically produce oxygen, while bacteria chemotactically move inwards, and then, strikingly, the algae are expelled from the illuminated region along with a fraction of the bacteria, which form a thin annulus at the light/dark boundary.

New study from @praneetpg, Vona, and @goldlabUC (DAMTP, @Cambridge_Uni) reveals how tiny swimmers like rotifers and algae have their own unique swimming styles — some pull water in while others push it away — leading to distinct surface interactions! @ go.aps.org/3BXMNDs

Many porous media have layers of differing permeabilities—causing uneven fluid flow. This paper in @JFluidMech, led by @CBrowneSciClown (+ amazing undergrads Richard & Callie), describes how polymers can help overcome this problem.

Congratulation @i_Grobas! In this paper, we provided more detailed characterisations of phase transition in B subtilis swarming colony. Collaboration with Great @PolinMarco.
Here the PhD results generated during the lockdowns @MRCDTP_IBR @WarwickLifeSci. After an in-depth analysis of videos of swarming bacteria forming multiple layers, we observed that such transition resembles phase separation in binary fluids. Full story: frontiersin.org/articles/10.…

🐝 How do bees build their beautiful combs? We provide new insights using 3D-printed geometrically frustrated lattices!
Now out in @PNASNews pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.22…
Led by grad student @GolnarGF, see her excellent summary🧵👇
I am excited to share our new paper “Crystallography of honeycomb formation under geometric frustration” in @PNASNews with Daisy Zhang, Francisco López Jiménez, and @oritpeleg.
Can we learn the secrets of collective comb construction from honeybees? 🧵
