About 130 million years ago the first flowering plants emerged, eventually bearing a dazzling array of fruits that would grow alongside the dinosaurs. But researchers have long questioned whether dinosaurs ever made these earliest fruits a main course.
Now, a toothless, turkey-size oddity with a parrotlike beak may be the first known dinosaur frugivore.
Researchers report a newly discovered dinosaur that lived alongside Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops named Infernogallus jamesi—meaning “hell chicken”—that was fully adapted to a fruit-based diet.
The anatomy bears a striking resemblance to modern parrots, the authors say. Learn more: scim.ag/3W7YW2R

Just launched electionhub.org, which puts every key election in one place, shows results in real-time, and calculates majorities and flips.
Both federal and state elections included. Hopefully it makes election night a little easier.

Trees are time machines! A single mature oak can absorb 48 pounds of CO2 annually, helping combat climate change. But did you know some bristlecone pines are over 5,000 years old, living links to the dawn of civilization?

About this H5N1 mink farm in Utah. It is REALLY dangerous to let bird flu spread unchecked through mammals, especially minks, which have similar susceptibility & respiratory physiology to humans. The virus can adapt to human hosts by adapting to the respiratory tract of minks.
A reminder that the Trump administration canceled a contract for an mRNA H5N1 vaccine in favor of pursuing an older technology that is not likely to work. Explanatory articles from the late, missed Helen Branswell: statnews.com/2025/08/11/mrna… and statnews.com/2025/05/03/nih-…

This is exactly the scenario that @DrFiliatrault, @TRyanGregory and I warned about in a Scientific American article last summer:

We weren’t the only ones. This is such a predictable disaster unfolding in slow motion.
There is something really concerning (and disappointing) going on in the US right now.
A dangerous and preventable situation.
Let me explain.

In 1944, an 18 year old American Marine walked into Japanese territory almost entirely alone.
He was just 5 feet 4 inches tall, spoke imperfect Japanese, and carried a weapon the enemy never expected: the language he'd learned growing up in Los Angeles.
On one extraordinary day, he persuaded roughly 800 Japanese to surrender.

That would be the food environment, and the eating habits of GLP-1 users are forcing Big Food to reformulation. More protein, fiber, & nutrients. Fewer calories & sugar.

1/ I’ve seen people on X claim that “mRNA has no place in the human body.”
That’s an extraordinary misunderstanding of one of the most fundamental processes in biology.
Your body produces messenger RNA (mRNA) continuously. It has been doing so since the earliest stages of your development.
DNA contains the genetic instructions for making proteins. mRNA carries copies of those instructions to ribosomes, the cellular machinery that assembles proteins.
Those proteins include enzymes that regulate metabolism, receptors that allow cells to communicate, structural components of muscle, and molecules essential to immune function.
Without mRNA, your cells couldn’t manufacture the proteins required to maintain themselves.
This isn’t some recent discovery associated with COVID vaccines. It’s foundational molecular biology, established decades before mRNA vaccines existed.

The EPA archive has historically been a resource for climate researchers and policymakers and "a tool for 'democratic oversight.'"
That, of course, is totally at odds with the priorities of this administration. 🙄😠
In a little-noticed webpage update, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced a plan to decommission its online web archive at the end of the year, a move that would wipe tens of thousands of publicly available environmental resources from the web. motherjones.com/environment/…
