It means entire countries and cultures will go extinct forever
fertility rates are so abstract that people struggle to understand the scale of the catastrophe we’re experiencing. take 1.14 children per woman (italy and japan) if that continues, each generation is roughly half the size of the one before it start with 100 people in a generation, the next only has about 54, then 29, then 16. in three generations, roughly a century, you have a generation 84% smaller than the one you started with. for taiwan that would be 97.4%! i don't think people really understand what that means

Those who are opposed to corporations and favor government do not realize that government is simply the largest, most monopolistic corporation of all and it has a monopoly on violence.

What’s actually going on in Ukraine is that there is a massive incentive difference between the elites and the people. The former have grown very rich off the hundreds of billions flowing to Ukraine, while the latter’s children are conscripted to die in trenches.

Starship, Starlink, Grok, and Roadster. These should all have been Sputnik moments for Europe. Triggered immediate deregulation, mobilization of capital, and ambition to catch up. And that's just the work of Elon's companies alone. But what do we get? A hollowed out EU Inc 💀

I imagine the "Hyperoptimized Engineer 2027" video will not have any screens, and just films a person whispering to their agent in the most awkward places youtube.com/watch?v=MhEL9cvL…

Linus Torvalds says, rules prohibiting AI usage are “UTTERLY STUPID” and “idiotic”. For the Linux kernel, Torvalds says, “we’re not going to make stupid rules that say ‘you can’t use tools for X’”.

The actual facts about SpaceX in Ukraine: - SpaceX is a private company with zero obligation to help Ukraine, yet it stepped up when governments dragged their feet. - Starlink and Starshield are not the same. Starshield is under U.S. government control. That is who made last night’s call. - Ukraine accounts for only a micro fraction of SpaceX’s revenue, while the company bears the risks of operating amid Russian attacks and geopolitical pressure. The financial return hardly justifies the exposure. SpaceX helps because it chooses to. Starshield access, meanwhile, is up to the US government. - SpaceX has every right to set limits on how its technology is used. They own it and bear consequences for it. This is while they actively collaborate to take down Russian access to Starlink that threatens to collapse Ukraine. - Throwing tantrums over not getting all your demands, including offensive use, or simply because Elon disagrees with you, while SpaceX risks its assets to help, says plenty about your character. - Demanding a company be nationalized so you can just take its product is the loudest confession that you cannot build anything. You can only steal. - Europeans should try to build their own. As a space fan, I'd celebrate it. - I don't care about the politics. But attacking the company that stepped up when it had no obligation to help is pathetic. The truth is, without Starlink saving Ukrainian communication in the early days, their reality would have severly looked very different today, and they should be grateful.

Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the US government. Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS. Starlink is a commercial service owned and controlled by SpaceX. Usage of Starlink is limited to civilian or defensive activities and cannot be used for offensive military action, as doing so would be inappropriate for a commercial company.

> european alternatives to Starlink lol lmao good luck here's to hoping you'll pull a European Alternative to Starship while you're at it
The next step for Ukraine and the European Union should be to begin consultations on gradually, but relatively quickly, replacing Starlink across military, law enforcement, intelligence, and government institutions with European alternatives, even if that means subsidizing.

Had it not been for Boris Johnson and Victoria Nuland -- who personally forced Zelensky to reject the deal Ukraine and Russia were about to sign in Istanbul in 2022 -- this horrific war that has killed more than a million and consumed much of Ukraine would have been long over.
It is sickening that the USA is now lifting sanctions on Russian fuel, and transparently ridiculous to blame Ukraine for the spike in prices that obviously began with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Putin is murdering innocent Ukrainian civilians every day. The Ukrainians are fighting for their lives. And yet the White House is apparently determined to force American drivers to bankroll Putin’s slaughter. It won’t work and I doubt it will make much difference to the price of fuel. If we want Russian oil and gas back on the world market then let’s end this war - with a free, sovereign and independent Ukraine.

I am deeply ashamed of the EU. Many, mostly on the left, seem to want to escalate already shaky relations with Russia and USA, at the same time. There is no diplomacy with rivals left, no humility. All while a debt crisis looms and energy is very reliant on imports.

People are surprised that AI is finding weird unelegant maths results like this. I think there is a plausible explanation. Maths (and adjacent disciplines like physics and comp sci) had elegant results so far because humans are biased towards elegant solutions. I think this bias is due to how human minds work. We have a pretty small context window, and we are only able to find solutions that are relatively elegant. This gave us the impression that maths and the universe are elegant. Maybe they are not, and we are now finding out because we have intelligences that can work with much more complex solutions.
You can do Fourier transforms in O(N log(N)^0.9999999999999) time. Fuck this gay chud universe
