5 years ago: Starlink is such a stupid idea. Anyone wasting money investing in this Musk scam deserves to lose everything. Today: Starlink is essential to the defense of an invaded nation. Access to Starlink is a human right! Nationalize it!

Sad how sports betting has fully pwned pro sports with Gronk casually breaking down the parlay pre-game. The betting is the product. NBD. :/

FWIW when it comes to trimming fat on briskets, Franklin does not do anything unique or more extreme at all. PS I hate BBQ nerds.
There is a queue at six in the morning outside a barbecue restaurant in Austin, Texas, that runs for five hours, and the people in it are waiting for a brisket with the fat left on, cooked for eighteen hours over oak by a man who has said the fat is the whole point. Aaron Franklin opened in a trailer in 2009 and has been named the best barbecue in America by everyone who hands out that title. The food is Texas, which means beef, and the beef is the brisket: the whole chest muscle of a steer, twelve to fifteen pounds, with a cap of white fat an inch thick across the top, which most of the country would trim off and throw away. Franklin trims it to a quarter inch and leaves it, and as the brisket sits in the smoke the fat renders down through the meat for most of a day, until the lean is soaked and the cap is a soft dark bark. He has written that the fat is what carries the smoke and the salt, and that a lean brisket is a waste of a cow. He went on television in a cap and a T-shirt and taught the technique to a nation that had been told for forty years to buy the lean cut, and the nation drove to Austin. People fly in. They bring chairs. They sell out by one in the afternoon, every day, and he has never once sold a turkey breast as a substitute. The thing on the chopping block, sliced thick, glistening, with the fat the colour of amber and the crust black, is the oldest food in Texas: a cheap tough cut of the animal, made glorious by heat and time and nothing else. There is white bread on the side and a pickle, and that is the meal. The leaflet says to trim the visible fat. Five hundred people a day stand in the Texas sun for the man who ignores it.

Band of Brothers. Watch in once a year. Golden.
Besides THE WIRE, THE SOPRANOS and GAME OF THRONES, what’s one HBO series everyone needs to watch at least once? Looking for those underrated gems and all-time greats that deserve to be in the conversation.

WTF, $3000 Samsung TV has an always-on mic, automatic content recognition, geo tracking, network mapping, and ships your data to Samsung + 400 partners. Bro Rooted a brand-new 2025 Samsung TV after noticing absurdly targeted ads. Firmware was locked down, so zero-days it was. Got a root shell. then found: always-on voice service, ACR, geo, full telemetry pipeline, and four separate DRM systems. This isn’t a bug, It’s the product bro.

This AirBnB saga is making one thing abundantly clear: Evergreen generational meme continues historic run
It's blowing my mind how many grown adults think it's unreasonable to ask them to clean up their own dirty dishes when they rent a house with a full kitchen.

For 3,000 years people have loved the same few building styles. Architects treat this as a problem to be solved, so they invent some shitty new style every generation, and then loathe the actual users for not appreciating it.
I visited Wurster Hall at UC Berkeley today. It was designed by, and currently houses, the architecture faculty. The UC Berkeley website notes that "Wurster is often voted Berkeley's ugliest building." I visited because I was curious about whether it would in person seem as unattractive as it does in photos. And, in short: it does. It's gaunt, austere, and filmed in grime. On an elysian campus, it stands out for its bleak hostility. It reminds me of the German submarine base in Bordeaux. The UC Berkeley page agrees that it was never designed to be attractive, quoting the curator of their design archives: “Wurster and his handpicked architects didn’t want anything romantic, or sentimental — they hated the idea of ‘making pretty buildings. They wanted a serious building.” I guess we have to concede success relative to their stated goals, but it does make one wonder what it all says about architecture as a discipline.

The architecture school is always the ugliest building on any American campus since it was built according the lights of whatever trendy architectural fad. Well known empirical fact.

The number of legit good ideas I had -- that I examined -- seemed too good to be true and obvious -- and then someone built a giant business around is insanely embarrassing.
The longer you build companies, the easier it gets to explain why an idea won’t work. Makes you wonder how many good ideas you’ve talked yourself out of along the way.

There’s probably 5-10% of founders who unnecessarily end up with ~nothing because of bad advice from their VCs re: M&A.
Holy moly... this new paper finds that 88% of VC-backed founders receive zero exit value 🤪🤪🤪

A few years ago, @EduardHabsburg sent a kind video message of support to my then ailing great-aunt, Judit Trunkhahn, a devout Catholic nun. Her sister, Nora, was my grandmother. Today, my uncle sends a blog post about a photo album Judit's brothers sent to Eduard's cousin, Otto, in 1937. Their father, Poldi (Leopold), was wealthy and a Legitimist. He is known in our family as Ópapi. When the Communists took power, they stole his estate and assets. Interestingly, both sides of my family had Legitimists - prob not surprising given they were both trad catholics. habsburgottoalapitvany.hu/cs… cc @GrayConnolly @erikdamato

All of the AirBnB drama boils down to the fact that hosts are running a >>norm arbitrage scheme to get better margin<<: Hosts deliberately conflate two sets of norms: 1) socially, you're a treasured friend/family who tidies up after himself. 2) commercially, you're a customer who paid for housekeeping. As a paying guest, you get the obligations of the first and the invoice of the second. It has always bugged me. No bueno.

It's amusing to read that Paris looters are discovering the watches they stole from Rolex and Patek Philippe stores are worthless shop units without working movements and secondly that all the Apple phones are display technology that locked the moment they left the store.

The funniest thing about Airbnb owners crashing out on threads is that their main response to everyone is "go stay in a hotel then" without somehow realizing that people have decided to stay in hotels instead and this is Airbnb trying to bring people back.

Too many people with zero customer service skills decided they wanted to run a single Ritz Carlton and provide Motel 6 service. If you want to see some Karen’s losing their ever loving minds over this new policy, go lurk in the Airbnb & STR Facebook groups. “Boycott! Strike!” Man, get over yourselves. People are on vacation AND they pay you a “cleaning fee”.
JUST IN: Airbnb hosts threaten to strike after the company bans them from forcing guests to wash dishes, strip beds, or take out trash before checkout.
