Two things can be true at once - readers should do their best to interact with fics so writers know their efforts are appreciated and writers need to understand what an archive means, how fandom works & transient nature of digital media and why readers may have copies of fics.

As an ao3 author, here's my take on the strange discourse going around about stories being shared on drives: I wrote it for free, I put it on the internet for free, I assumed that meant people were reading, sharing, and downloading for free If I published a book, my expectation

I write and share fic for the love of the game. I love engagement and comments/messages fuel my fire, but I don't do it *for engagement*. to each their own ofc but it makes me a little sad that so many people are prioritizing how they'll miss engagement over shared downloads.

for site-locked fics, I get the concern about drive sharing more, but still. idk. i'm not loving the takes about how ao3 should remove download options or make them optional. at a certain point when you release any art to the world ya gotta just let go and let god
