Have you ever worked on a winning election? Or an election in general since you failed the nation in 2016 & couldn’t find the rust belt on a map? There’s a great Steve Jobs quote about this
He was in the habit of regaling new executive hires with this tale of “what’s the difference between a janitor and a VP”?
For a janitor, if you couldn’t clean a room because it was closed and you didn’t have the key, that was okay. That’s an understandable excuse
But if you’re a VP and you couldn’t get the job done because the room was locked and you didn’t have the key, that wasn’t acceptable. You’re expected to figure it out
Different domains
The mayor can’t tell voters “oh we couldn’t do it because of this or that”. Voters don’t care about explanations

Dear @SFBART,
YAY! WE WON!
The residents of the Bay Area have given public transit an enormous vote of confidence and BART a 14-year lifeline.
But that support comes with expectations: change, transparency, accountability, and ultimately, financial self-sufficiency.
We cannot mistake this victory for permission to continue doing business as usual. The clock is ticking, and we need to fundamentally rethink both our revenue model and our cost structure to address BART’s long-term structural budget deficit.
The traditional model, built around weekday commuters traveling to and from downtown offices, no longer works. And even if more employees return to the office, we cannot afford to depend exclusively on commuter fares to sustain our system.
We need to reinvent BART for the next generation of riders, revenue, and regional mobility.
We have to start somewhere. Here are a few thoughts to get the conversation moving:
1. DEVELOP A LONG-TERM INNOVATION & FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE ROADMAP
- Create a 5-, 10-, and 15-year roadmap with measurable goals, performance benchmarks, and clear accountability
2. BUDGET, OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY & NEW REVENUE
- Rightsize staffing: Leverage workplace efficiencies, technology, and automation
- Reduce non-emergency overtime: When recurring overtime becomes the norm, evaluate whether additional staffing is more cost-effective
- Monetize station parking assets: Explore digital billboards and other advertising opportunities
- Implement dynamic parking pricing: Consider surge pricing, as well as evening and weekend parking fees
- Explore dynamic fare pricing: Evaluate time-of-day and direction-of-travel pricing to better manage capacity and generate revenue
3. RIDER EXPERIENCE & FARE INNOVATION
- Extend weekend service: Keep the system open until 2:30 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and New Year’s Eve (Thanks, Maddy!)
- Explore early openings on weekends to encourage airport travel
- Rethink fare structures: Introduce a simplified pricing model:
- Short trips: 1-4 stations
- Longer trips: 5+ stations
- Dedicated airport fare
- Expand BayPass: Develop an individual rider option
- Reward frequent riders: Explore a “Ride 4 Days a Week, Get 3 Free” program
- Expand pass options: Offer monthly, family, and tourist passes
- Maintain equitable access: Fare-free programs for eligible students and riders with disabilities
- Strengthen first- and last-mile connections: Work with small bus operators and feeder-service partners to identify sustainable funding opportunities for their services and strengthen coordination around BART schedule changes
- Improve Paratransit: Evaluate bringing the service in-house or developing a procurement model that attracts more competitive bids and delivers better value
- Put politics aside on BSVII: Ensure the project meets or exceeds BART’s safety and operational requirements - or reconsider moving forward
4. TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT (TOD)
Every TOD project should create a destination, not simply add housing.
We need restaurants, bars, clubs, entertainment, retail, and other attractions that give people reasons to visit our stations throughout the day and evening
We cannot rely solely on TOD residents to generate the ridership and economic activity needed to make these investments successful
5. LEGISLATIVE & REGIONAL REVENUE OPPORTUNITIES
- Revisit Proposition 13: Pursue meaningful property tax reform
- Explore a sustainable payroll tax: Develop a long-term, dedicated funding mechanism that better reflects the regional economic benefits of public transit
- Eliminate transaction fees on public transit purchases via credit or debit cards

Might be too early to tell, but I think something else might've ended on Tuesday too: The Era of Rancid Feelings.
Marked principally by leaders and political types choosing to be rigidly dogmatic, assholes, or racing to their most base instinct, feels like most people said enough!
The limit, in fact, DOES exist.
Across the country, you had a sea of happy warriors ushered into office by an electorate crying out that it just simply should not be this hard.
This isn't a kumbaya thing. It's a cut the shit and focus thing. And it's incredibly pleasing to me.

No amount of condemnation of Hamas will erase the fact that SF's conservatives and supposed moderates regularly called Scott Wiener a disease spreader and a pedo, while also calling him a globalist and a foreigner
All of which are amalgamations of various antisemitic tropes

Leftists be like: "Yes, Roy Cooper is a successful, popular two-term swing state governor who won a Trump state by 20 points, broke the Republican gerrymander, carried 5 Dems to the House majority, and helped Democrats win the heavily gerrymandered State House and come 200 votes from a trifecta, but have you considered that he doesn't have the most important quality in a leader, getting a standing ovation at a Pod Save America event?"

Most newsrooms have explicit photo ethics policies and train journalists to understand that altering a news image this way is a fireable offense.
Revealing to see how The Free Press measures up.
Especially since its founder is about to oversee two visual news organizations.
Hello my name is Olivia Reingold and I used ChatGPT to brighten and sharpen an image of a woman in Valentino shoes and a Chanel bag.
After processing, it still shows these same things: a woman wearing Valentino shoes and a Chanel bag.
She is a real (and chic!) woman, really wearing those items. The observation holds.
Here’s the photo I took:

Wow, a pretty damning article with diverse lines of evidence.
Most people do not realize just how easy the AP exams have gotten. They are not college level.
Why/how have they become so easy? What's going on?
This might shock you... A brutal new piece in Education Next just dropped, saying the decline in rigor of the AP in the last two decades is, in large part, because the content has been GUTTED. For example:
— AP Biology cut 40% of its material
— Required lines from the Aeneid in AP Latin halved
— Spanish Lit reading list cut from 56 works to 38
Then the questions themselves have become absurdly easier. Readability measures show English passages have fallen multiple grade levels, and some now include footnotes defining basic words...
A 2025 AP English prompt included footnote definitions for words like "optimism" and "pessimism."
At the same time, scoring was recalibrated so that more students pass: guessing penalties disappeared, rubrics grew more generous, readers were told to give students the benefit of the doubt, etc. — "no one at College Board had any incentive to maintain rigor."
College professors are now seeing students arrive with AP credit who lack basic content knowledge and writing ability. The College Board insists the exams have not become easier, but everybody familiar with them knows they've become an absolute joke.
Advanced Placement is no longer advanced. This is not college level.
It must be replaced.

Let's talk about the long history of the Left mocking Black Southern voters.
Remember when Bernie Sanders said having to many Southern states go early "distorts reality" in the primaries.
Or when Progressive Democrats of America mocked Southern primaries as "the Confederacy."

NO, Morris- YOU are the most useless voice in the Democratic Party-
You plucked a subpar candidate off an oyster farm, didn’t vet him, filled his head full of delusions, lied to the public & party, then ran cover for him while pocketing God knows how much $ off the whole deal.

The Democratic Party, was at its height of its political power when the political ideology of a candidate matched their geographical background rather than the parties orthodoxy. We need a broad spectrum of Democrats from southern states, coastal states, and Midwestern states — because that’s what America is: diverse and progressive. Progressive doesn’t just mean left. Progressive means fighting in rural conservative communities to move the needle as well.

Congratulations to Congressman-elect Scott Wiener.
He helped build California’s YIMBY movement.
And he passed laws that sped up housing approvals and legalized apartments near transit, giving more families a shot at a home.
Excited to see him fight for housing in Congress.
Thank you, San Francisco. I’m deeply grateful for the trust voters have placed in me, and I’m ready to get to work for you.
I want to thank Supervisor Connie Chan for a spirited and hard-fought campaign. We’ve had our disagreements, but we share a deep love for San Francisco and for our country. And thank you to our incredible campaign team, to every volunteer who walked precincts or made calls, to everyone who donated, hosted a house party, or put up a window sign, and to the labor unions, the environmental, housing, LGBTQ, and progressive organizations, the Democratic Party, and the elected officials who stood with us every step of the way. You turned this campaign into a movement.
I’m humbled to carry forward the powerful legacy of this seat — Phil Burton, Sala Burton, and the greatest Speaker in modern American history, Nancy Pelosi. Speaker Pelosi came to Congress to fight AIDS when too many wanted to look away, and she never stopped fighting for our city and our country. Madame Speaker, thank you.
This victory is also historic. For the first time ever, San Francisco will be represented in Congress by an LGBTQ person — indeed, no LGBTQ member of the House has ever represented any part of Northern California. When I stepped off the escalator at Castro Muni Station in 1997 and fell head over heels for this city, I could never have imagined this honor.
San Franciscans voted for results, and we have so much work ahead: Building the millions of homes we need; moving toward true universal health care; investing in clean energy, public transit, and high-speed rail; standing up for science, education, and immigrants; making sure people — not massive corporations — decide what works for this country, including on AI; and ensuring the rule of law applies to everyone, including the President.
It won’t be easy. But on Election Day, voters across the country delivered a powerful mandate for Democrats in Congress. I’m deeply inspired by the trust they placed in us to take big swings to lower the cost of living, stop the endless wars, hold Trump and his cronies accountable for their corruption, and rein in the threat of artificial intelligence. In Washington I’ll bring the same determination I showed in Sacramento every single day.
It’s time to deliver a better tomorrow for our city and our country.

These small details don't go unnoticed by some of us.
Perhaps they do for you, since you still consider him a genius who suffers for the poor Russians sent for money to kill Ukrainians.
