have been looking for a way to track runners through dense forests
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks. By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time. Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.

finally with AI we can reverse-engineer things like "Mickey Mouse"
I'm an IP/copyright dove but it's still remarkable how most rights-holders ngmi It's not that AI is trained on stolen data. It's that AI creates a generalized ability to Reverse Engineer Anything and so the supply of cheap substitutes goes brrr. Ironically the proliferation of these capabilities is itself largely irreversible. There's no point suing or complaining. This is AI working as intended: commoditized intelligence for x leads to abundance in x. Rents are deflated. No amount of lobbying will change the supply-side effect. Technological innovation is in a sense a permissionless mechanism for redistributing property and rents at scale.

to most americans the idea of saddam hussein opening up a cheesecake factory is actually very positive
Does Obama not understand that to most Americans the Cheesecake Factory is a very nice and fancy restaurant?

Gotta stand up for normal people here: we like walking around outside too
What's highlighted is very bad, but I think it's really funny that Dario has "walking around outside" listed as a major locus of life pleasure, something that sounds totally natural to a certain species of autist and pseudo-autist, but absolutely insane to normies. I get it, man!

you wouldnt believe what else has a long track record of massaging social science findings to support whatever point (the disciplines of social science)
HBO's @LastWeekTonight has a long track record of citing social science findings without the appropriate context, massaging them to support whatever point @iamjohnoliver is trying to make.

good piece. seems worth emphasizing that invoking fukuyama here implies that "AI" is not a rupture but a continuation (to ezra a "sharpening") of the same processes that have led to "the end of history"
The most revealing part of this conversation between Jon Stewart and Jacob Coxon wasn't Coxon's warning about A.I. doom, but his description of A.I. utopia, and Stewart's incredulous response. I wrote about it — and Francis Fukuyama's "Last Man," and A.I. easily solving the problems that bedeviled my father's field of mathematics for decades — here: nytimes.com/2026/10/18/opini…

"discovery of php vulnerabilities" probably not the example i'd choose of "material changes to ordinary life." the main effect on me in my capacity as a normie has been that my favorite daily logic puzzle didn't record my score today while the dev fixes his backend :(
Life is basically the same as it was in 2021. This is a normal experience caused by a normal technology. Ordinary people are experiencing no material changes from this mildly useful office productivity software people are calling AI.

"His favorite film is a different Cruise vehicle, Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky, a notoriously polarizing fantasy-versus-reality thriller that he estimates he’s seen upwards of 85 times."
all of the answers i was hoping i would get about YCSE from that nathan interview are actually in this (fantastic) profile of lance oppenheim: he explains how [redacted] got involved, holmes' relationship dynamics IRL, and whether nathan was being real vulture.com/article/lance-op…

A few readers have taken me to task for “missing the point of the film,” which is apparently that Elizabeth Holmes is unknowable and everything is ambiguous. Here’s my response: She went after Tyler Shultz and Erika Cheung with everything she had. I was threatened with litigation on a daily basis for months on end. It was a ruthless cover-up of a breathtaking fraud, and she was at the controls. Just a little context for those who have forgotten or didn’t follow the original story. By the way, I loved the film. #BestPicture, IMO.
