michael wasn’t some self-destructive bohemian artist lost in existential angst, romanticizing his suffering & retreating into an ivory tower to escape reality. he didn’t burn himself out for his art. he was consumed by ppl with malicious intentions & ultimately killed by them.
Madonna explains the real reason legends like Michael Jackson, Prince, and Jean-Michel Basquiat burned out.
“When you channel artistic ideas and you have creative visions, it’s magic. And when you overthink it or you start thinking about how much of that you own, you stop it. A lot of people have these meteoric careers and they rise up and take the world by storm… and then something happens and they can’t handle the light. In a way, they fly too close to the light and it burns them.
I would say that’s really true about many of my peers… whether that’s Prince or Michael Jackson or Jean-Michel Basquiat. These are people who were channeling, but I don’t think they understood that there has to be some kind of restriction. People like to take drugs because they’re actually channeling light… but it’s light with no restriction. And then that’s what kills you or burns you out.”

Michael wanted to go eat Japanese food, and as usual, he would send someone to the restaurant to pick up the meal so they could eat it in the car. When asked if he wouldn’t like to go inside, he replied: “I wish I could but you don't know what you're asking. We could actually get hurt.
People, as well meaning as they might be, will crowd around and push and shove to the point where it actually gets scary. Besides, I've learned from past experience that someone would make a list of what I ordered and then have some psychiatrist draw some ridiculous conclusions about my state of mental health from the food that's on the table. I know that happens because I went to a drug store once and I bought toothpaste, a toothbrush, shampoo, some razors, and deodorant. A few days later a gossip magazine had used them to evaluate my personality." With a laugh, Michael concluded, So I'll just settle for here in the car."

We don’t talk enough about how background vocals can make an entire song. The layered harmonies, countermelodies, and call-and-response moments sometimes become just as memorable as the lead vocal. That’s an art form in itself.
