Iโ€™ve spent years deploying robotics - โ€˜gear backlashโ€™ is a fundamental problem with actuators. Backlash is among the main reasons why precision cannot be achieved. This toy from @Daniel_Van_Zant illustrates backlash brilliantly! You can see that there is a 'dead zone' where the motion doesnโ€™t get transferred from the back wheel to the front wheel. Even though gears appear to mesh, because the gear profile / shaft isnโ€™t perfect, the back wheel wobbles a bit without actually moving the gears. In actuators, this blacklash translates into a situation where the rotor turns, but the output shaft doesnโ€™t. In a robot, this means: 1.โ  โ Your robot joint may be at a different position compared to where the encoder thinks it is 2.โ  โ Your robot joint will wobble between two states (like the back wheel of the toy car) even though the rotor is static. You can feel this by playing with robot joints like youโ€™re giving it robot physiotherapy. The problem with gear backlash in actuators is that it is microscopic. This is the main reason why even the best arms say โ€˜0.1mm accuracyโ€™ because these dead zones add up sequentially across joints, resulting in a stacked backlash. Backlash also gets worse as gearboxes wear out. QDDs with their planetary gearboxes wear out fastest because stress is focused on a few teeth compared to harmonic actuators, which is a trade-off for other benefits. Improvement in the near future is essentially better gearbox topologies, better simulation-driven gear profiles, searching for suitable materials, more precise machining, better modeling of wear and tear over time (so you can work around it), etc I truly believe that the optimum actuator is a long way ahead. It is like chips in the early 2000s, which went from 20nm to 10nm to now 2nm. We will iterate to the best actuator over time and the team who can iterate the fastest will win.

Our mission to put decisive airpower in the hands of every operator isn't limited to a single environment or mission set. AM is built to adapt, removing the barriers that keep operators standing by for airpower and giving them the flexibility to configure one aircraft as mission demands change. Maritime operators need airpower that can launch, recover, and keep pace with the mission. Last week, PDW and Waiv Robotics conducted initial static integration testing of the C100 with Waivโ€™s WR-15 UAV launch-and-recovery platform. The collaboration addresses a persistent challenge: safely recovering larger unmanned aircraft aboard moving vessels. The goal is to put organic UAS capability aboard @USnavy, @USCG, and unmanned surface vessels without relying on traditional aviation infrastructure. Next steps include integration refinements and dynamic underway testing to validate performance in real-world maritime conditions. For operators, the objective is clear: extend their reach, deliver persistent ISR, and reduce risk to personnel. Decisive airpower in the hands of every operator.

๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ RUSSIA | Satellite Imagery Reveals Massive Over-the-Horizon Radar Under Construction in Kaliningrad Newly published satellite imagery from ICEYE reveals the construction of a large Russian over-the-horizon (OTH) radar installation near Gvardeysk, in the strategically important Kaliningrad exclave, between Poland and Lithuania. The SAR imagery, captured in late August 2026, shows three extensive antenna arrays, each exceeding 500 metres in length. The arrays converge in a distinctive Y-shaped configuration within a double-fenced military compound. According to reporting based on ICEYE intelligence, the radar is designed to detect aircraft and missiles at distances of approximately 900โ€“3,000 kilometres, potentially extending Russian surveillance coverage across significant portions of European NATO territory, including Germany, France and the United Kingdom. The installation represents a significant expansion of Russia's long-range surveillance infrastructure in the Baltic region. Unlike conventional line-of-sight radars, OTH systems can exploit radio-wave propagation through the ionosphere to detect targets beyond the Earth's curvature. Its geographic position could strengthen Russia's strategic early-warning capabilities and situational awareness across Northern and Central Europe. However, the imagery establishes the physical development of the facility, not its operational readiness. The reported detection range remains a projected capability rather than independently verified performance. The project forms part of a wider Russian effort to expand electronic intelligence, surveillance and military infrastructure throughout Kaliningrad. The C100 is earning its place in @USArmy Aviation history while helping shape what comes next. Built to adapt and proven in Soldiersโ€™ hands, the C100 has quickly established its operational value and place of recognition among mission-enabling military aircraft. The C100 continues to be fielded with Army units around the world, putting reconnaissance, communications and other critical mission capabilities in operatorsโ€™ hands through one modular aircraft. That field experience drives continuous improvement, with operator feedback from real-world missions helping PDW refine performance, integrate new capabilities and keep the aircraft evolving with the force. This Saturday, October 24, the Army Aviation Museum will unveil a C100 as its newest display, connecting the Armyโ€™s aviation heritage with the adaptable systems supporting its formations today. See it at the Models & Machines show and Training Support Facility Open House, 10 a.m.โ€“3 p.m., at Fort Rucker, Alabama. Video credit: Army Aviation Museum Foundation go.pdw.ai/4ivfBGi

this is incredible the guys at Citrini used Claude to design completely new proteins for a potential scorpion antivenom Claude launched more than 300 agents, ran the research, designed 211 proteins in 64 hours, and sent the designs to a lab for testing. 17 of the 211 designs actually worked in the lab, binding to their targets we are now at the point where just a few people with AI can do in days computational design work that used to require entire teams of specialized scientists and this is just the beginning

I once sold a truck to a guy who called and agreed to pay full price as long as I brought it to the airport within the hour. It was incredibly sus, but my truck had been for sale for months, and I had grown desperate. So I went. It only got weirder. The moment I arrive he hops in the drivers seat for a test drive, and a run to the bank to get the money to buy it. Heโ€™s a freakishly large porcine fellow, adorned head to toe in dirty work clothes. He looked like Hagrid if he were an alcoholic with a the worldโ€™s most unionized construction job. We get to chatting on the drive. Work, life, conspiratorial ramblings, Donald Trump, Pakis. The usual, if you know this type of guy. I come to learn he needed to buy my truck to get home. He had bought a one way plane ticket to come buy a different one, but had been ghosted by the seller when he landed. He was stranded at an airport on the other side of the country with no other plan. So I thought, โ€œwell maybe I know the guy who ghosted him. Let me see if I can help.โ€ I asked to see his phone to read his FB Marketplace message with the seller. He had been talking to some guy with Broken English and a vaguely middle eastern sounding name for several days now. The guy was selling an incredibly desirable truck for 30% below market. A virtually impossible deal. The vehicular equivalent of a horny singles in your area add on a porn site. He turned to me and said โ€œyโ€™know, his listing says the truck is about an hour from here, maybe I should go look for him.โ€ I said โ€œbro Iโ€™m looking at his profile, he has this same truck listed in every city in North America. The plate in the photos isnโ€™t even from our state. This truck is spammed hundreds of times across marketplace.โ€ To which he replied, โ€œyeah I thought that was weird. I think itโ€™s a glitch.โ€ โ€œNo itโ€™s not a glitchโ€ฆ you didnโ€™t send him money did you?โ€ I asked, fearing the answer. โ€œYeah I sent him a money, otherwise he was gonna sell it to another guy.โ€ I winced. โ€œhow much?โ€ โ€œFive thousand bucks.โ€ โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆokay.โ€ โ€œWell letโ€™s look him up, we have his name.โ€ He replies confidently. โ€œLook him up where?โ€ I ask. โ€œFacebookโ€ โ€œIโ€™m looking at his Facebook. Itโ€™s not real.โ€ Just then we arrive at the bank, he parks my 2500HD in the handicap spot at a 45 degree angle. I say maybe we should pick a different spot, he tells me he isnโ€™t picky. We set up the wire transfer, he makes a disparaging remark about brown people to the teller. She frowns, she is brown. The money luckily still gets sent. And he takes off in the truck. Hours later he calls me from the middle of nowhere. He had decided to fuck with the aftermarket tuner while driving and bricked it. He was stranded. I donโ€™t think all you xitter users realize just how difficult the modern world already is for an 85IQ person to navigate. With 53% of youtube shorts views now coming from AI content, these people are about to be thrust into a completely incomprehensible dream realm forever.

Crazy banking stat from FT: JP, BofA and Wells Fargo carry $1.6 trillion of ZERO interest deposits. Paying 3% would wipe out half their earnings. So the big banks blocked the exits. No agents allowed. What do you think happens next? Meta probably buys a bank and rebrands it Muse Freedom or something to provide a warm off-ramp. Simply put in your current interest rate (um zero) and tally how much you would make by porting over (a lot more). Takeaway: A business that depends on the customer being ill informed or lazy is doomed to succumb to the market equalizing forces of AI. Just a matter of time.
