Today is the 80th anniversary of Operation Market-Garden. On D+1, my great uncle, 2LT Theodore Ripsom piloted his CG-4A Waco glider towards the LZ N landing zone southeast of Groesbeek. Here are a few of his amazing photos. #OperationMarketGarden #WW2 #gliders #MarketGarden80

Fighter ace Neel Kearby received the Medal of Honor for his actions #OnThisDay in 1943. In the skies above New Guinea, Kearby and three fellow pilots attacked an enemy force of more than 40 planes, destroying many and driving them away from American forces. #WWII #WeRememberThem

On June 18, 2022, @USNavy christened DDG 122, the USS John Basilone. During WWII, GySgt Basilone received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942, and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.

"“Boys, I did but my duty; the dear old flag never touched the ground!” - On this #FlagDay we remember Sgt. William Carney, despite being wounded, carried the flag of the 54th Mass. to and from the ramparts of Battery Wagner and earned the #MedalofHonor. #flagday2022 #USArmy

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Midway. Here’s Ens. George Gay’s life preserver that he used after being shot down attacking the Soryu. Gay was the only survivor of the 30 members of VT-8 who attacked on June 4 #Midway80 #USNavy @NavalMuseum #Midway

So sorry to hear of the passing of Gen. Colin Powell. A true patriot and representative our nation and its military. I had the privilege of working with him in a 2015 video. He did this in one take and from memory - impressive: youtu.be/dJ7CVVlkAmM #Colin_Powell

So sorry to hear of the passing of James Hornfischer @navy1944. His books remain some of the best, most stirring naval histories I have ever read - "Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors" and "Neptune's Inferno" most notably. He will be missed! #authors bit.ly/3zxmcrs

The destroyer USS Johnston (DD-557) has been found by Victor Vescovo. CDR Ernest Evans earned the #MedalofHonor for his valiant, sacrificial charge against Japanese BBs and CAs in #WW2. Evan's remains are likely on or near the ship. @USNavy @MohMuseum bit.ly/3sLaS6V

Seeing more images of this famous destroyer brings this 1944 history to life. The guns are still swiveled 90 degrees out - as it was engaging passing Japanese warships. And the deck still shows large holes from enemy shells. #courage #HazeGray Thank you @VictorVescovo
