The Department of Homeland Security is openly engaging in an unprecedented, partisan campaign to intervene in the midterm elections. My latest piece @NewYorker surveys the effort and looks at what it means at the local level: newyorker.com/news/the-polit…

Doxing, online abuse, and threats have touched virtually every person connected to the “Cornell Seven” case, from the alleged perpetrators to the victim—and people who have no real ties to the case at all. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/M4…
The alleged assailants were doxed. So was the victim. And the person who published her name. And people not tied to the case at all. A Chi Phi grad falsely accused of being in the Snapchat asks, “How many have seen my name and view me as someone I’m not?” newyorker.com/news/american-…

The last public execution in America was in 1936. A young black man in Kentucky was hanged by a drunk executioner; a news story said "They Ate Hotdogs While a Man Died." Was such an embarrassment that the governor outlawed it 18 months later washingtonpost.com/politics/…

Emmanuella is one of the thousands of Haitians who were living and working in the U.S. legally when Trump revoked their TPS. She left her job, desperately tried to find a husband, and began to disappear. The quiet unraveling of a Haitian life in America: newyorker.com/news/our-local…

3 weeks since T.P.S. for Salvadorans was set to expire & the Admin has still said nothing. What's going on? Lobbying by Bukele is part of it. So is, according to sources, construction in the capital (a topic of obsession for Trump). My latest @NewYorker: newyorker.com/news/the-lede/…

I visited @cornellsun students at their office last night — and talked with them about the campus rape case they've been investigating for 23 months, and the decision to publish the names of the seven men involved in the lawsuit on their front page. nytimes.com/2026/09/29/nyreg…

We spoke with 12 Texans who voted Trump in ‘24 and were considering Talarico, undecided, not voting, etc.; they had a lot nuance on the economy, Texas, their disappointments with policy right now (and then were more emphatic about the senate candidates) nytimes.com/interactive/2026…

Michael Lee Horrocks and his ex-wife, Leah Stelly, disagreed on their kids’ medical care. Leah had come to the belief that vaccines are dangerous, and to a broader world view that aligned with the Make America Healthy Again movement. Online, she posted about Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., “b!g ph@rm@,” and living a “non-tox” life style, and recorded lessons for her 11,000 followers on divine femininity and receiving messages from the universe.
Michael did not share Leah’s MAHA sensibility, but he was no liberal scold. He had nonspecific theories about the pandemic, which he believed “duped a lot of people in a lot of different ways,” and he didn’t get the COVID vaccine. However, he wanted his kids to receive the same basic vaccinations that he had received when he was a child. Leah refused. Then their kids got sick—and doctors said it could be measles. I wrote about Daysi González, a strategist who consults for the DCCC and has helped elect AOC and Gallego. She's never been undocumented in the US, but is now planning to go back to El Salvador if Trump doesn't extend TPS this week. How will Washington—and her clients—react?
A father wanted to vaccinate his children. Their mother didn’t. Then the kids got sick.

The world knows a great deal about this president because of Maggie’s reporting, which she does at the expense of being singled out for attacks like these. Those attacks don’t stop her. I haven’t seen anything that can. She’s beautiful inside and out (and so is a free press).

ALT “The Times’s reporting is based on information from multiple people with knowledge of the discussions and planning around New York’s Sept. 11 ceremony. Our journalists sought comment from the White House communications team, who provided a statement that didn’t contradict what we had learned. The president chose to attack the story 24 hours later, singling out one of the four reporters who wrote it. We are confident in the accuracy of the reporting.” — Charlie Stadtlander, a spokesperson for The New York Times
