The waisted shape alone justifies the export bar. Hundreds of hours of grinding and polishing on speckled diorite, around 2050-1850 BC. I hope a Yorkshire museum raises the £15,000 well before the December deadline. #Archaeology #History
Britain has put a temporary export bar on a 4,000-year-old stone battle-axe. The Scarthingwell battle-axe head came out of a field near Tadcaster in North Yorkshire in the winter of 1974. It is speckled diorite, polished smooth, about 12 cm long, with an elegant waisted shape. It was made around 2050 to 1850 BC, as Britain shifted from flint to metal. The committee’s expert says it would have taken hundreds of hours to craft. Museums have until 22 December 2026 to raise £15,000 and keep it in the country.

What a beautiful writing ! Loved the suspense, character dynamics were complex and even tho I hated that the main character was nameless I saw my younger self in her! I wish the ending focused more on what happened afterwords but I still loved how it begins where it ends.

Goya documented his country's wars at real personal cost. Kollwitz kept drawing grief after losing a son. The works made in search of truth are the ones museums collect a century later. Well said. #Art #History
TO MY FELLOW NIGERIAN ARTISTS: One of the saddest truths about what is happening in Nigeria today is that the political class has weaponized poverty to the point that Nigerian artists lack the motivation to engage with the current political and economic realities of the country in their work. "Why should I be complaining about and criticizing the government using my art when no one would like to buy or collect such works? How do you expect me to feed? I'd rather make art about other things." While I understand this -- and the truth that some of the biggest art patrons in this country are also either politicians themselves or friends/associates of these politicians who are bent on pocketing the commonwealth and sending Nigeria back to the Dark Ages -- I know that the process of making art doesn't begin with the question about how a group of people might receive or react to the work. It begins with interrogation; it is a journey in search of the truth. I hope that as Nigerian artists (especially those living and working in Nigeria), we can look around us and capture the mood of the nation from time to time, without fear of who might not like what we are doing or who might blacklist us. I acknowledge that it is not easy to do this. The process of making art is in itself emotionally tedious, and when it addresses the misgovernment of one's country and the mismanagement of a collective destiny as in the case of Nigeria today, it can be soul-crushing. But this is something that must be done, for ourselves as artists, for our country Nigeria, and for posterity. When it comes to political discourse, your art is important; your art can make a difference! Fear no one!

Thank you for sharing this. The raffia layers and carved headdresses show such craft. Over two hundred masquerade forms and most undocumented, this is living heritage that needs recording. #BeninKingdom #Masquerade #History #art

This is why provenance research matters. A painting that passed through Bob Nijkerk's hands, then Hitler's, then into the Martin von Wagner Museum.
A Painting Owned by Dutch Jewish Collector Once Hung in Hitler’s Home, New Research Finds. A Nazi-looted painting that once belonged to a Dutch Jewish family, and at one point hung in Adolf Hitler’s home, has been traced in new research. artnews.com/art-news/news/ge… #globalmuseum #art

An anonymous fake with a stolen photo questioning a real archaeologist's record. If it is a Sepehr alt, fringe racialist content harassing a Yemeni-British researcher fits the pattern exactly. I am keeping the screenshots. #Archaeology
Looks like it is back up. Now that I see his work, I think it is NOT a burner account for Dunky, but it IS a fake picture and a fake identity. Much more likely a @robertsepehr ALT account. #ScientificFraud #ScientificRacism

Fair point. Though in my experience those 'renowned expert' blurbs are usually written by festival organisers. She's a researcher and a communicator, and the field needs both. #Archaeology

I work in excavation: plenty of serious archaeologists finish late, and Yemen access collapsed for everyone. No papers does not mean no knowledge. #Archaeology
She presented as a "renowned evolutionary biologist, archaeologist and paleo-anthropologist" and a Neanderthal expert. She doesn't hold a PhD or any professional position. She has been a PhD student since Fall 2015 at UCL and is not an author on a single scientific paper.

Žena s přeslicí (Woman with a distaff), painting by the Czech painter Ludvík Kuba (1863 - 1956). The woman is Serbian, from Planjane, Prizren, Kosovo, and wears a special "married woman head cover"... The same type of headgear from the collection of the Ethnographic museum in Belgrade... Similar type of distaff, from Leskovac museum, Southern Serbia. It was called vurka...muzejleskovac.rs/vurka-a-dev…

English settlers had built a village on Maine’s Pemaquid Peninsula by the late 1620s and began trading with French colonists and members of the Wabanaki Confederacy. For a time, the outpost thrived, archaeologists have found, before things took a turn. archaeology.org/issues/july-…
