🪨A 400-million-year-old classroom! (1/2)
We hosted students from @AMNH's Master of Arts in Teaching Science program for their annual visit to the MHB. Behind our bridge office lies an ancient rock outcrop, estimated to be over 400 million years old. Talk about hands-on teaching!

The Valley's geology layers share a rich story of continental formation, mountain building, & glacial impact, making them some of the most scientifically significant in the Appalachian region.
We’re always excited to support the next generation of Earth Science educators!

Preliminary glass data from the #2023svartsengi eruption! The ongoing eruption north of Hagafell, although more evolved, has a similar composition to the late erupted lavas from Fagradalsfjall. Glass MgO and K2O/TiO2 are of 6.0 wt% and 0.24, respectively.

So proud of @samtramrox during her PhD defense! She is why I started studying 🌋and I can only hope to be like her one day. She makes being a scientist feel possible.(Ignore the tears. I hadn't heard Sam, @ma_longpre, or Dr. Ludmans voice in like 3 years and couldn't stop crying)

Volgaynoes, a volcanology-themed queer art collaboration with @AilsaNaismith is now live on Kickstarter! 🏳️🌈🌋🏳️🌈
This is a science-art collaboration that shows off the beauty and diversity of volcanic processes on our planet while celebrating LGBTQ+ scientists and volcano lovers.

ALT A close-up photograph of pins, stickers, and greeting cards featuring the art of volcanoes and magma flows around the word through colours of the Progress Pride flags. The following text is on the graphics: a Palaeoiris and Alias in ink present Volgaynoes, a volcano-themed queer art collection. A green strip is at the bottom with "Just launched on Kickstarter" logo on it.

New paper alert! We use microCT to look at 3D chemical zoning in sanidine. Couple findings: 1) we can correlate this CT data to Ba concentration 2) sanidine zoning can be very complex such that 2D images will miss it. @geowhateverist pubs.geoscienceworld.org/msa…

Geochemical results from first 48 hours of Mauna Loa eruption:
> glassy near vent
> small crystals of plagioclase and olivine at flow front as lava cools
> 6-6.8% MgO
> eruption temp 1156 C (2113 F)
> similar to past lava compositions
> no leftover lava from 1984 is apparent
