The largest crypto exchange in the world just experienced the largest robbery in human history—and the person running it is a nomadic autistic man in Dubai posting “Funds are SAFU!” What a time to be alive.

I was having a conversation with my two-year-old son yesterday. I said “Look, as a systems thinker, it is critical to understand that behavior emerges from structure, not parts.” He said “I know, dad. The structural patterns persevere even when the parts are replaced.”

Rick Ross tells the media he is innocent as he walks out of jail after being arrested on domestic violence charges, including felony battery by strangulation. “I’m totally innocent of these fabricated allegations made against me. I’ll be in Dubai tomorrow, Paris Saturday, and I plan on having a bowl of rigatoni with heavy marinara Sunday. I repeat, heavy marinara.” (Via @fox_sheldon)

A democracy cannot coexist with an oligarchy. If you have both, you only have one. And it's not the one you voted for.

Years ago, I was punching calculator buttons and knee deep in international tax law, sure my career was headed that way. A few conversations with Blessing, a good friend from secondary school, changed my path completely. Today, Blessing needs help. She has earned a place at @Esade Business School, but funding for international students has become very hard to get this year. She has to pay an €8,000 reservation fee by 1 November (talks are in to extend the deadline) to secure her place. She’s also facing surgery, which makes this an even harder moment. If you can give anything, it would mean a great deal. If you can’t, and I know many people are stretched right now, please share this with someone who might be able to help. gofundme.com/f/help-blessing…

Hi everyone, I’m Marvellous, some of you know me as Ini. I’m a few months from finishing my MPH at NYU. I planned for this year with a student loan and a summer internship but it didn’t come through. Then this month, MPOWER shut down. I was on their waitlist. #FundDrMarvellous

I’ve seen tweets from scholars complaining about how they wrote their papers independently, without using AI, only for peer reviewers to feed their papers into AI tools and provide AI generated reviews of their work. You can choose not to upload your documents to AI tools, but how do you stop a reviewer from doing so?
I’m begging y’all, don’t ever upload your raw data to any AI platform. You risk losing the originality of your work, and it might become unpublishable. A word is enough for the wise.

There was a chap at Oxford who came up in the 80s to research the 4 year tenure of a Yorkshire bishop. He spent 40 years on it, draining an inheritance left on condition it was spent on his education. Daily Mass (sometimes several times a day), lobster every day at Brown's next to the Oratory (hence the gout), magnificent dinner parties for miscreants, oddballs and grad students, and generous to charity. His fingers were so fat that his signet rings appeared stuck to them. Having spent every last penny, he was evicted from his apartment and became a monk some 3 years ago. No wife, no kids, and I don't think the DPhil ever got finished. Top 5 most eccentric human beings I’ve met in my life. Bless him.
When I was at U Chicago we had a 53rd year PhD defense. They started a career in grad school and remained ABD until after retirement. All of our completion stats were skewed because they never officially left the program.

The fact that MC Olumo, a known thug, is etched permanently in public discourse on governance reflects the uselessness that pervades our pretend democratic state. We are an unjust society, very far from Grace, God, and anything pure.
