Unlike the Venice Film Festival, where the documentary NAZA received a record 25-minute standing ovation, the sold-out screening I attended greeted the film's end with stunned silence. The credits rolled. The lights went up. We traipsed to the exit. No one said a word. That seemed a much more fitting response than the one in Venice. Ever since, I have been pondering what exactly our stunned silence meant. Was it shock at the horrors inflicted on Gaza? Not really. Barely any of the destruction and mass-killing was shown. We have seen far, far more of the genocide live-streamed on our phones. Was it the fact that none of the interviewees appeared to regard the official figure of nearly 75,000 dead in Gaza, and more than 175,000 maimed, a Hamas-inspired fiction, as the Israeli government continues to claim, with the western media following suit? In fact, the strong impression conveyed by the military insiders interviewed by the film-makers is that the true death toll is likely to be far higher. Was it the astonishing lack of self-awareness and reflection among most of the interviewees, who spoke drily – mostly indifferently – about the technical aspects of Israel’s innovative AI systems, which drove target selection to destroy homes and kill Palestinians on an unprecedented, industrial scale? Selected from more than 100 Israeli military personnel who spoke to the film-makers off camera, the chosen 24 included some who had helped engineer what they called a “factory” for murdering Palestinians. Others operated this production line, killing by algorithm, as though, in their words, they were playing a “video game“. According to the interviewed soldiers, for every person suspected of being in Hamas, however junior their status, Israel authorised the killing of between 20 and more than 100 NAZA – the Hebrew acronym for Palestinian bystanders, including women and children. When Hamas carried out its one-day attack on Israel in October 2023, the Israeli military claimed the group had around 30,000 fighters. In addition, Israel – and its AI machinery – connected a far larger portion of the population to Hamas, if only because individuals worked for the Gaza government’s political, bureaucratic and administrative arms, from school teachers to doctors and nurses. The film’s interviewer, Yuval Abraham, put to one interviewee a simple observation about the maths. According to the logic of Israel’s NAZA doctrine – permitting potentially dozens of civilian deaths for every Hamas-linked target – almost the entire 2 million inhabitants of Gaza were viewed as acceptable “collateral damage”. The intelligence official mulled this point for some time, as though it had never occurred to him, before agreeing. This is an extract from my latest article NAZA is not just about Israel and Gaza. It’s about the evil lurking in us all. Find a link to the rest in the reply post below ⬇️

A huge moment in US politics. AIPAC, which for decades ploughed untold millions into paying candidates to do Israel's bidding, is ending direct donations. The AIPAC name has become toxic in a country where popular support for Israel has collapsed. npr.org/2026/10/21/nx-s1-601…

I tried to intervene on him to pull him on it but he wouldn’t let me in. Claire Hanna called him out in her speech. Utterly despicable, well done John for calling it out.
My open letter to Conservative Party MP David Davis regarding his dangerous & disgraceful IRA lawyer comments.

In the endless cavalcade of gaslighting that is politics these days, we're supposed to forget that the IHRA definition was drafted to aid data collection, and its lead drafter has repeatedly criticised how it's been used. Being seen to adopt it has become the point in itself.
Antisemitism is a scourge on society and we are committed to stamping it out. We’ve accepted all 27 recommendations of the Bell Review, including encouraging schools and colleges to adopt the IHRA Working Definition. We will continue to promote its adoption internationally.

I see Emma Little-Pengelly rather late in life has discovered the concept of press conferences and photo-opps.

Been teaching for 18 years. I have seen, heard, & heard of, instances of sexism, homophobia, & racism against PoC at work. But I have never seen, heard, or even heard about a single instance of antisemitism. In 18 years. This is now industrial strength gas lighting. Madness.

If Iain Duncan Smith really cares about truth and justice, I will ask the Court Services for permission to show him an MOD document in which his friend, Captain Robert Nairac, is accused by a fellow, serving British officer of planning and executing the Miami Showband murders.
The IRA were terrorists, not soldiers. Their campaign of murder and bombing was not a war of equals, and no amount of historical revisionism will ever make it so. Labour’s Northern Ireland Troubles Bill risks allowing the IRA to rewrite history while British veterans face the prospect of being dragged through investigations decades after serving their country. Where is the accountability for the IRA? Where are the answers from the Irish Government about those who fled across the border, the support they received and the supply of weapons? I served in the British Army. My friend, Captain Robert Nairac, was murdered by the IRA. His body has never been recovered. His family still deserves to know what happened to him and where he lies. The IRA cannot be allowed to portray its campaign of terror as justified by the Good Friday Agreement. Peace does not retrospectively legitimise murder. There is no moral equivalence between terrorists and those who served to uphold the law. This Bill is a betrayal of our veterans and of families still waiting for the truth.

The BILLIONS of people on track to be killed this century won’t all be climate campaigners. Climate campaigners are just people willing to accept uncomfortable scientific truths, while governments bury their heads in fossil fuel profits.

Early appointment so went out very briefly to see if the Ravens were about. No Ravens but surprised to get my best ever views of the Barn Owl in the rain. I have a window of a couple of hours later to hopefully see the Ravens but it’s wet so I will try not to worry if it don’t!

We don’t know if unionist or nationalist areas are more dangerous for asylum seekers as the report doesn’t say? #BBCTalkback Of course we know. Bit like saying if I hear hooves in the distance, I don’t know whether it’s going to be horses or zebras. Technically true, but come on.
