A great review of @frederikdeboer's book by @DaphneMerkin "it is an impassioned yet cleareyed analysis of how disability activism, deinstitutionalization, romanticization of the mentally ill, and the anti-psychiatry movement (with its accompanying anti-medication agenda) have ended up harming the very individuals they propose to help". nytimes.com/2026/10/27/books…

As the son of a lawyer, I am pretty sensitive to rights and due process, but this post alone describes reasonable grounds. Worse still is the "let's keep the focus" language, as though public opinion on policing is a distraction from an ongoing manhunt or something.
We want to address some confusion surrounding the investigation into the home invasion in the Bridle Path neighbourhood. Investigators immediately recognized the potential connection between the home invasion and the individual who showed up at hospital with a gunshot wound. But recognizing a potential suspect and having enough evidence to arrest them are two different things. Suspicion alone isn’t enough. Police need reasonable grounds, supported by evidence, to make an arrest. We will continue to gather evidence and will go where the evidence takes us. We are grateful for the professionalism, tenacity and commitment of our investigators who continue this work. Let’s keep the focus where it belongs: finding the outstanding suspects and holding those responsible for this violent home invasion accountable.

Feeds both here and on the "kinder" site are all about Haley Stevens, and I confess don't even really know who she is (nor do I much care). #Canadiansleepingnexttoelephantproblems

Did any mainstream outlet cover this? (Back in the day you didn't know a thing about your teachers' polical beliefs, which is how it should be, imho.) catchjcp.substack.com/p/that…

The difference between Bluesky's and X's takes on what is happening in Poland is quite illuminating and is helping me understand what is actually going on.

“Antisemitism is both an indicator and an accelerator of radicalization and its spread – as history shows – and it is not just a threat to public safety but to social cohesion and democratic values.”

The rise of Mean Girls politics is one of the weirder recent developments, and I suspect its actual significance is still underappreciated

If he keeps saying things like that, it will become impossible for Canadians to pay for their own drinks in any bar in the democratic world.

I'm old fashioned but I don't think journalists should be telling people ("joking") to go kill themselves

My reaction to last night's result in my hometown: "A vote for Chow was, if nothing else, a vote that didn’t care about what Toronto’s Jewish community has suffered. In the overwhelming majority of cases, I suspect people never even thought about it at all."

Really good summary and I think all of this is dead on. I don't think I still had any hope Toronto's progessive electorate would actually be alarmed by the antisemitism (or even agree it's happening) and, yeah, I think a lot of us will be taking that at face value.

I’d like to apologise. The last week has finally made me understand that the real victims of the shocking rise in antisemitism are not Jewish people (and Jewish school children in particular) but Owen Jones, Sarah Helm and Sally Rooney. I hope they’re ok and I’m very sorry for having got this wrong.
