A great review of @frederikdeboer's book by @DaphneMerkin "it is an impassioned yet cleareyed analysis of how disability activism, deinstitutionalization, romanticization of the mentally ill, and the anti-psychiatry movement (with its accompanying anti-medication agenda) have ended up harming the very individuals they propose to help". nytimes.com/2026/10/27/books…

As the son of a lawyer, I am pretty sensitive to rights and due process, but this post alone describes reasonable grounds. Worse still is the "let's keep the focus" language, as though public opinion on policing is a distraction from an ongoing manhunt or something.
We want to address some confusion surrounding the investigation into the home invasion in the Bridle Path neighbourhood.
Investigators immediately recognized the potential connection between the home invasion and the individual who showed up at hospital with a gunshot wound.
But recognizing a potential suspect and having enough evidence to arrest them are two different things. Suspicion alone isn’t enough. Police need reasonable grounds, supported by evidence, to make an arrest.
We will continue to gather evidence and will go where the evidence takes us. We are grateful for the professionalism, tenacity and commitment of our investigators who continue this work.
Let’s keep the focus where it belongs: finding the outstanding suspects and holding those responsible for this violent home invasion accountable.

My reaction to last night's result in my hometown:
"A vote for Chow was, if nothing else, a vote that didn’t care about what Toronto’s Jewish community has suffered. In the overwhelming majority of cases, I suspect people never even thought about it at all."

Really good summary and I think all of this is dead on.
I don't think I still had any hope Toronto's progessive electorate would actually be alarmed by the antisemitism (or even agree it's happening) and, yeah, I think a lot of us will be taking that at face value.

I’d like to apologise.
The last week has finally made me understand that the real victims of the shocking rise in antisemitism are not Jewish people (and Jewish school children in particular) but Owen Jones, Sarah Helm and Sally Rooney.
I hope they’re ok and I’m very sorry for having got this wrong.

The dying Sun may tear the outer solar system apart far sooner than anyone expected.
New research in The Astrophysical Journal Letters suggests that once the Sun sheds its outer layers and collapses into a white dwarf, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune could be thrown into chaos in roughly a billion years—not the nearly eternal stretch of a quintillion years previously imagined. Earth will almost certainly be long gone by then, but the gas giants may not survive either.
Traditional models assumed the outer planets would quietly endure for eons until a random passing star finally disturbed them. Researchers Konstantin Batygin and Jim Fuller of Caltech, along with Fred Adams of the University of Michigan, found a more violent possibility: if the Sun loses mass in discrete bursts rather than a smooth wind, the planetary orbits can be destabilized relatively quickly.
“Everything changes when the envelope departs in pieces,” the authors wrote. In simulations of 672 burst-driven scenarios, up to 96% of the systems became unstable within 3 billion years after the Sun became a white dwarf. About 40% suffered disruption or violent scattering even earlier, before mass loss was finished. Some planets were ejected entirely; in others, Uranus and Neptune swapped places.
Gentler bursts sometimes locked planets into stable resonances that held for billions of years, but the overall picture is clear: the Sun’s death may not be a slow fade. It could be a comparatively rapid, chaotic upheaval that ends the orderly architecture of the outer solar system far sooner than once thought.
