my church choir leader, Mrs. Bell, has a rule that nobody joins the Sunday choir unless they can "hold a note and hold a promise." she has turned away every guy i've ever brought, including one who could genuinely sing. i was having such a good time on my third date with a guy named Caleb that i forgot to warn him i had invited him to my Sunday rehearsal. we walked in, the whole choir turned around, and Mrs. Bell lowered her baton, looked at him over her glasses, and pointed at the empty seat in the back row. I told my roommate I was going to propose to my girl. He said “Don’t do it yet. Something feels off.” I ignored him and bought the ring.
The night I was going to ask her, he called me and said “Check her location.” She was at his place. When I got there he opened the door and said “I told you something felt off. I just didn’t say it was me.”

My girl said her ex was still texting her and she wanted me to handle it. I told her to just block him. She said she already tried and he kept making new accounts. So I messaged him from her phone and told him to stop.
He replied “She gave me this number last night. She said you’d do exactly this.” I looked at her. She shrugged and said “I just wanted to see if you’d actually fight for me.”

Three years ago, my neighbor told us in a very ugly way he didnt want our cats in his yard. I responded not the nicest in return, but did acknowledge his rights to a cat free yard, and immediatley started working on a solution. I was doing good. They were staying in. One got out, he used sardines to lure her into his yard, trapped her and took her to the next city and dropped her off. The security guard at the place he dropped her took her to the pound. We found her a month later.
My flight got cancelled, and the only available replacement flight had first-class seats, so I paid the extra fee and continued with my trip.
After returning home, I called customer service to ask for a refund of the first-class upgrade.
Agent: Sorry, I can only offer you a $25 gift card.
Me: I don’t want a gift card. I’m never flying with your airline again.
Agent: There’s nothing else I can do, but I’ve enjoyed our conversation.

my grandpa has a rule that any guy i date has to beat him at one game of chess before he'll shake his hand. he's been the neighborhood champion for forty years, and he keeps a framed photo of the board from every game he's won. there are 23 frames on his wall. i was having such a good time on my second date with a guy named Oliver that i forgot to warn him i had said yes to Sunday lunch at my grandpa's house. we walked in, and the board was already set on the dining table, with grandpa sitting behind it in his reading glasses and a cardigan, not saying a word. Oliver looked at the board, looked at me, and went "is this lunch or a tournament??"..

I'm 21, a junior, and I've never gotten below a B+ in my life. This semester I'm failing a class I was good at, and I know exactly why.
He's the professor everyone calls "the legend": charming, well-published, with a reputation for picking favorites. Early on, I was one of them. He'd stop me after lecture to say my paper was "the sharpest in the room." I felt seen.
Then came office hours. He started closing the door. He'd pull his chair around the desk instead of sitting across from me, close enough that I could smell his cologne. He asked whether I was seeing anyone, then said I was "wasted on boys my age."
One afternoon he rested his hand on the back of my chair, his arm brushing my shoulder, and said, "I take care of the students who take care of me. You understand what I'm saying."
I said, "I think I'll just keep studying."
He didn't move his arm. He smiled and said, "Studying won't be enough, sweetheart. Think about it."

my flight attendant friend, Priya, has a rule that she never lets anyone sit in the seat next to me on a flight unless she "approves their energy." i fly every other month for work, and she's worked my route for years. last month i was having such a good time at the airport gate chatting with a guy named Luke that i forgot to tell him Priya was working my flight. he boarded, found the seat next to mine, and sat down smiling. Priya walked down the aisle, stopped, crossed her arms, and said over the intercom in her calmest voice, "ladies and gentlemen, we have a seat inspection in row 14." Luke looked at the speaker, looked at me, and went "is she talking about me??"..
My son suddenly STOPPED taking money whenever he wanted to hang out with his friends, and I started wondering if something was going on.
Whenever I offered him cash for movies or food, he’d simply say, “It’s okay, Dad.” But he doesn’t have a job or receive much allowance, so I couldn’t understand how he was managing.
One day, I noticed there was barely any money in his wallet. I finally asked him how he was paying for things, and that’s when he opened up.
One of his friends was going through a difficult time because his father had lost his job.
The boy would often claim he wasn’t hungry or couldn’t afford to join the others. So my son started suggesting activities that didn’t cost anything, like playing basketball, visiting the park, or hanging out at someone’s house.
Whenever the group planned something that required money, my son would sometimes pretend he was broke, too, so his friend wouldn’t feel embarrassed or left out.
I WAS SO PROUD OF HIM.
I asked if his friend knew what he was doing.
“No, Dad. And please don’t tell anyone,” he replied.
Eventually, the whole group began choosing more free activities without anyone making a fuss about it.
