PEOPLE WITH STRONGER PSYCHOPATHIC TRAITS MAY ENJOY HORROR MORE, STUDY FINDS — USING OUTLAST FOOTAGE! A new study published in Psychological Reports explored why people with stronger psychopathic traits may respond more positively to fear-inducing content. Researchers conducted two studies involving 825 and 425 participants, respectively. Participants watched first-person footage from the survival-horror game Outlast and a roller coaster ride, then rated their emotional responses. The findings suggest that stronger psychopathic traits were associated with more positive reactions to frightening footage and, in some analyses, weaker negative reactions. A sense of invincibility — the belief that you can avoid or overcome danger — helped explain part of this relationship. Boredom proneness did not show the same effect. Important caveat: Participants watched gameplay footage rather than playing the game themselves, and the study measured personality traits, not clinical diagnoses.
