Medicine is where that question gets concrete. Each year a good drug arrives late is a year some patients go without it. AI that helps design molecules, read the literature and plan trials shortens that wait, and slowing it down has a cost that rarely shows up in the debate.

Technology has had a decisive impact on reducing hunger, poverty and serious crime. It is overwhelmingly a force for good. If the police don't do any actual detecting of crime, why is there a prison over-crowding crisis?

I think we've crossed an important threshold ARTEX, Cairn and similar frameworks can now automate substantial parts of real intrusions. And as models become cheaper and more capable, the number of attacks is no longer constrained in the same way by human skills, time and attention I wrote about what changed, why this is different from traditional automation, and what I expect to happen next medium.com/@cyb3rops/the-tip…

While much of Europe drowns in debt, Switzerland offers a radical alternative: spend within your means, keep taxes low and let markets work. In the 2026 Heritage Index of Economic Freedom, Switzerland ranks second in the world. Property rights are strongly protected, regulation is light by European standards, and fiscal health remains sound. Public debt sits well below the levels common among its neighbours while the tax-to-GDP ratio is 27 per cent, closer to the United States than to France or Germany. A constitutional debt brake, approved by voters in 2001, requires the federal budget to balance over the cycle and has constrained the growth of spending even through crises. Openness has reinforced the discipline. Switzerland maintains high levels of trade relative to the size of its economy and has long treated foreign investment and competition as normal rather than as threats. Neutrality has kept it outside the military and fiscal commitments that have expanded state budgets elsewhere. The combination has produced a high-income economy whose government does not need to borrow continuously to fund its operations. The contrast is stark. Countries that raised taxes, expanded entitlements, and treated debt as a routine tool of policy now face the arithmetic those choices created. Switzerland’s approach has been less dramatic and less frequently celebrated but has proven much more durable. Low taxes and open markets just works.

JUST IN: French blood bank hit by cyber attack with blood samples being heated to 110 degrees Celsius from their maintained -30, per Le Canard Enchaîné.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The 110 °C figure was the value hacked equipment was reprogrammed to reach, which does not mean the cold rooms or plasma bags actually reached 110 °C. France's health ministry said the anomalies were spotted in time, with no operational consequences. cyberattaque.org/cyberattaque-c…

When young people cannot afford a home, start a family, or see a path to a better life, revolution becomes a more attractive alternative. Between 1970 and 1999, 80% of conflicts occurred in countries where more than 60% of the population was under 30. This is what we need to help prevent with the upcoming technological shift.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's decision to abolish the country's citizenship income welfare scheme and introduce stricter benefits has coincided with unemployment falling to its lowest levels in two decades, including in southern Italy. Italy reached a record 24.36 million employed people in the second quarter of 2026, an increase of 246,000 from the previous year. Unemployment fell to 6.3%, while the employment rate reached a historic high of 63.4%. In southern Italy, approximately 500,000 jobs were created between 2021 and 2024, with regional GDP growing 8.5%, compared with 5.8% in central and northern Italy. Sicily's employment rate rose from 44.4% in 2020 to 51.4% in 2026. Meloni's reforms, introduced in 2023 and fully implemented in January 2024, replaced the previous welfare system with targeted assistance for vulnerable households and employment or training requirements for other eligible adults.

WTF. Cybersecurity firm Sophos says its incident-response team handled SEVEN major incidents in SEVEN days, a workload that normally takes THREE MONTHS. The WSJ reports security firms are overwhelmed by what insiders call 'Black October.' MoxFive says newly breached companies may have to wait up to FIVE DAYS for help. Security executives say AI is helping attackers exploit vulnerabilities faster than defenders can respond.

Can confirm that this has started in earnest now and it is brutal and close to unstoppable.
The AI models have accelerated the cyber threat to such a degree governments around the globe are coming to terms with the fact it is just a matter of time. There is no infrastructure for dealing with this volume of new attacks and potential vectors for attacks. Orders to stockpile supplies etc, they know we are in uncharted territory and everyone from peer adversaries to individual actors have a toolkit in their possession that nobody was prepared to confront this quickly.
