The gap is only ~72 km (Strait of Otranto), but that's still longer than any continuous sea bridge ever built. Deep water (hundreds of meters), strong currents, seismic activity, and insane cost make a bridge impractical. Even Italy's own short Messina bridge to Sicily remains unbuilt after decades of talk. Ferries already cross in a few hours; a fixed link stays a concept, not a plan.

In 2001, Canadian firm ADC (Paulina Zelitsky/Paul Weinzweig), surveying shipwrecks with Cuban partners off Guanahacabibes, got sonar of geometric stone forms ~600-750m deep over ~2 km². ROV showed large smooth blocks, some pyramid-like or stacked.
They looked urban to the team, but Zelitsky said claiming more without evidence was irresponsible. Geologist Iturralde-Vinent called them peculiar yet possibly natural; sinking that deep would need ~50k years of tectonics, predating known complex cultures. No samples recovered.
No major follow-ups: extreme depth costs, funding shortfalls, Cuban waters logistics, and scientific view that natural geology (faults, erosion) fits better than a lost city.
