🇺🇸 Washington just went after Iran’s money in 🇨🇦 Canada.
The US Treasury sanctioned 8 money services firms in Ontario and British Columbia, which it says moved money for sanctioned Iranian entities.
They’re now cut off from the dollar system.
“Canada cannot be a safe haven,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
The same day, FinCEN cut off crypto exchange MEXC Global from US banks.
It says MEXC handled at least $ 16bn of illicit transactions linked to Iran, North Korea and Russia.
It’s the money side of the blockade.
Iran’s oil exports are already close to zero under the US Navy.
Now Washington is closing the channels that move what’s left of its cash.
The timing is awkward for Ottawa.
Carney is negotiating a trade deal with Trump and the sanctions land in Canada’s own exchange shops.

Talk about double speak. When questions come up about the $2.3 billion military satellite contract for Telesat, Carney says he wasn’t involved in the decisions and points to a decision made by the previous government. Meanwhile Conservatives are asking the ethics commissioner why the longtime friend who runs the company isn’t on Carney’s ethics screen at all.
Telesat’s latest numbers show the legacy business revenue down about 20%, a $157 million loss in the last quarter alone, and billions in debt coming due with real questions about whether the old side of the company can stay afloat. Lightspeed is delayed again. Creditors have sued over how assets were moved. Yet taxpayers are still on the hook for the big new contract (plus earlier loans) while the company keeps burning cash and missing timelines.
If the company has been struggling this badly, why keep writing the cheques? And if the Prime Minister has a close personal relationship with the CEO going back years—running club, book club, swearing-in attendance—why is there no screen so Canadians can at least see the safeguards that are supposed to exist? Other ministers have screens that cover the same CEO. Carney’s does not.
This is the same pattern. Big announcements. Careful wording. Money flowing to connected companies. Weak accountability. Then blame the previous government when someone asks basic questions. My grandkids will pay the interest on the debt and live with whatever capacity actually gets delivered—if it gets delivered.
Kitchen-table question: if the project is so essential and the process so clean, why does it take this much wordplay and this much continuing taxpayer support for a company posting these kinds of results?

Voters are seeing the job losses, the increasing unemployment rate, and have now heard the spend-heavy/debt ridden Liberal budget.
Canadians are also experiencing the same affordability crisis that Americans rejected in the midterm elections. Democrats campaigned on affordability, Republicans did not.
Are Canadians going to vote to elect more Liberal MPs, or are they going to send a message to Mark Carney that they’re ready for change?
Nothing is going to change if Canadians keep supporting the same government who created the economic issues in Canada and have yet to come up with a plan to fix them.
