Although preventable and treatable, cholera disproportionately affects vulnerable populations in fragile and humanitarian settings, with risks compounded by conflict, rapid urbanisation, climate change and recurrent natural disasters.
This World Health Organization Health Emergencies EPI-WIN webinar will highlight the latest guidance on designing and operating cholera treatment facilities, with a focus on water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and infection prevention and control (IPC). By strengthening how facilities are planned and managed, these measures can improve patient care, protect health workers and help reduce the spread of cholera during outbreaks.

Avian influenza A(H9N2) continues to circulate widely in birds and causes sporadic human infections. Understanding these risksโand connecting evidence across human, animal and environmental healthโis essential for pandemic preparedness.
This webinar provides a One Health update; supports awareness on avian influenza A(H9N2); and provides an opportunity for engagement around the emerging Strategic Framework to accelerate Quadripartite action on avian influenza.
This is an opportunity to understand the latest evidence, engage with experts and explore its implications for public health action.

1 in 8 new cancers worldwide is caused by an infection.
Study in @TheLancetOncol shows an estimated 2.3 million new cancer cases globally in 2024 (~12% of all diagnoses) were directly attributable to infectious agents.
When we talk about cancer risk, the conversation usually centers on genetics, aging, and lifestyle. But these findings highlight a powerful, actionable reality: Infection control IS cancer prevention.
Key Takeaways from the IARC Study
Just 5 Pathogens Drive the Vast Majority of Cases:
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori): ~760,000 cases (primarily gastric/stomach cancer)
Human Papillomavirus (HPV): ~760,000 cases (cervical, anal, head & neck cancers)
Hepatitis B & C (HBV/HCV): Major drivers of liver cancer
Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV): Linked to nasopharyngeal cancer, stomach cancer, and lymphomas
Updated Evidence: The analysis incorporated 12 infectious agents in total, expanding on associations for HIV, Merkel cell polyomavirus, and the link between EBV and gastric cancer.
A Massive Global Health Equity Gap: While infection-related cancers occur everywhere, the heaviest burden falls on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where access to routine screening, sanitation, and vaccines remains uneven.
The most compelling aspect of this data is that many of these cancers are preventable or treatable with tools we already possess today:
Vaccination: Scaling up global coverage for HPV and Hepatitis B.
Early Screening & Antibiotics: Eradicating H. pylori before it leads to chronic inflammation and stomach cancer.
Antiviral Access: Expanding access to curative Hepatitis C therapies and suppressive HBV treatments.
Saving millions of lives doesn't always require waiting for novel drug discoveriesโit requires closing the implementation gap between existing medical science and global healthcare delivery.
Where should healthcare leaders and policy makers focus first to close this gap? #PublicHealth #Oncology #CancerPrevention #GlobalHealth #IARC #LancetOncology #HealthcareLeadership #PreventativeMedicine

A masterclass in climbing down a tree, leopard style ! The mother guides her cub, adjusts its footing, and the little one follows.
A 40-year study published in the Journal of Animal Ecology found that leopard mothers cared for their cubs for 9 to 35 months, staying with them longer when prey was scarce. Even after the cubs stopped suckling, their mothers provided most of their food until they became independent.
And what stays with the young after they leave ? A 2024 Nature Communications study of wild brown bears found that offspringโs feeding habits resembled their mothersโ even after they leave, partly through learning during their time together. Different species, different skills, but a familiar truth, so much of life begins beside a mother.
