MPs and peers are giving themselves a cut-out, and they're hoping nobody notices. The minister told the Lords it "would not be appropriate" to extend the offences to them. Well, we noticed. Want to stop them? Ask me below how you can help.

Abdul El-Sayed on President Trump, "If you're in a trade war with Canada, it's because you're the *sshole" My view: There was no trade war with Canada until Trump chose to start one. He turned a stable trading relationship into a needless confrontation.

To everyone who voted for Trump… To everyone who sold his chaos as "strength” To everyone who cheered his cruelty To everyone who shrugged at his Epstein links and cover-up To every one of you who brought us here: He is your legacy …and we will remember.

If people want to understand the objections to Elon Musk, look at what he chooses to do with his enormous resources. Today, he has reportedly spent another £200,000 on the legal costs of Tommy Robinson, a far-right, drug-addicted thug with a long criminal record. Robinson was convicted in 2005 of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assaulting an off-duty police officer, receiving a 12-month sentence. In 2011, he was convicted of assault after headbutting a man and received a 12-week suspended sentence. That same year, he was convicted of threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour after a football-related brawl and received a community rehabilitation order. In 2013, he was jailed for 10 months after using somebody else’s passport to enter the United States. In 2014, he received 18 months for mortgage fraud. In 2019, he was jailed for contempt of court after interfering with proceedings in a grooming-gang trial. And in 2024, he received another 18 months for deliberately breaching a court injunction by repeating false allegations about a Syrian schoolboy. Now, in 2026, he is back in court facing two charges of harassment causing fear of violence against journalists. He denies the charges. Rather than using that money to help the hungry, the homeless, the sick, Elon Musk is choosing to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds helping fund his legal battles. Can someone who supports Musk genuinely explain the moral justification for this?

Oh no! A nation mourns.
Nigel Farage will no longer write for The Telegraph, which published regular opinion columns from the Reform UK leader, reports The Guardian. It comes after columnist Allison Pearson was let go following Axel Springer's £575m takeover of the title theguardian.com/politics/202…

If this happens, all eyes on Alito resigning in the lame duck session. Might be his last opportunity to resign under a Republican president/senate maj for a long time. Would be 4th Supreme Court pick for Trump.
Last batch of NYT/Sienna polls are out. Bleak picture for Republicans. Not sure Stevens endorsement will be enough

Laura Kuenssberg, "More and more politicians are flirting with rejoining the EU as the answer to our economic woes" Andy Haldane, "Could closer EU links help to bolster growth? Yes" "Are they the answer to all our prayers growth wisse, absolutely not" My view: Nobody serious is claiming closer EU ties are a magic fix for every economic problem. But if they can help boost growth, reduce trade friction and open up opportunities for British businesses, why rule them out? The question isn’t whether Europe can solve all our problems. It’s why politicians spent years making our relationship with our biggest trading partner harder, then act surprised when people ask whether closer ties could help.

I'm very clear that this is a comment on the industry and not the journalist. I have no idea about the merits or not of his investigation because what most people don't seem to realise is that @timeshighered never published it. It may be a first to be nominated for a prize for a story that never ran. But the issue I'm raising is the optics of a ballroom full of pissed-up journalists celebrating the gotcha of a man who took his own life.
Not a single news outlet has reviewed its coverage of Jason Arday, for accuracy or proportionality. Zero attempt has been made to conduct any inquiry into the media’s role in his death. Instead, the industry has moved into self-congratulatory mode. This isn’t just tone deaf, it betrays a systemic failure

First the UK media buried its own role in Jason Arday’s death & then it white-washed it. This week, it celebrated it. Re-posting my piece from August because the de-humanisation continues. The UK press continues to fact check a corpse, while refusing to correct a single false claim 🔗 👇 1/

There is no area, of any city which isn’t made infinitely better by well-thought through pedestrianisation.
people replying like the rest of europe hasn't been removing cars from city centres for years now and all of them are cleaner, happier, prettier public spaces which their residents prefer

Obama mocking Trump, "He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened up a Cheesecake Factory" My view: Obama took aim at all the gold Trump has added to the White House, and did it with the kind of dry wit that makes the point better than a long speech could. The White House is meant to represent the country, not serve as a showroom for one president’s taste. There’s a difference between restoring a historic building and covering it in gold to make sure everyone knows who’s in charge. Trump sees grandeur as a statement of power. Obama made the whole thing sound ridiculous in one line.

Beth Rigby, "All of the people in the Makerfield focus group voted to Leave the EU. When Burnham said it at conference I thought: Brexit betrayal. Those Leave voting parts of the country won't like this." "But you ask those people and they don't seem to mind (closer ties with the EU" Brexiter 1, "I voted to leave.. Much younger then.. Didn't understand it.. Dad told me to vote for Leave.. It's harder now.. Maybe it would be better if we went back" Brexiter 2, "Everything seemed better when we were in Europe, it just did" Brexiter 3, "I think we were over-promised things.. I think we would be much better as part of an EU.. Than on our own" Brexiter 4 says she would vote the same way because she thinks we would have to adopt the Euro - currently six EU countries do not use the Euro My view: The Makerfield focus group tells you how much the Brexit argument has changed. These were all Leave voters. Now one says she didn’t understand what she was voting for; others say life in the EU felt better, that they were promised too much, and that Britain might be better off as a member again. That doesn’t mean every one of them would vote to rejoin. It does show that the old assumption—that Leave voters would always reject closer ties with Europe—is wearing thin. Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage helped persuade people that Brexit would deliver easy gains, without being honest about the trade-offs or what leaving would mean in practice. The euro objection shows how those scare stories still shape the debate. - Six EU countries currently don’t use the euro and the UK had an opt-out when it was a member. What this shows is the need for clear information, not deception, half-truths and outright lies, shaping the conversation. Because when people are given clear accurate facts, the majority of them do not buy into populist rhetoric, so much of which is based on hate and division.
